I'm really thinking that the mods here need to be a tad more strict. I mean, I love you guys 100%, but there's so much derailment and spam that goes unnoticed and unpunished.

http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=126526

Is a perfect example.

I get the feeling that everybody on HL2.net, especially the noobs, gets the idea that spam is ok. Hell, most of the spam I see is from people who've joined in only the past year, who seemingly spam because they see senior members do it.

Hell, i'm even guilty of this (thinking that spamming HL2.net is ok).

I'm thinking that it's because nobody really ever gets punished for spamming, unless it's extremely severe, and on a board flooding level.

Maybe it's because not enough people report the spam?

I like spam myself - it's yummy. What else should we talk about between frequent (i.e. year+) valve releases?

By spam I mean shit that has nothing to do with the thread topic. It gets irritating and I see it praised and supported way too often.

Look sinkoman! Obviously you don't seem to get it. Sony is causing cancer! Microsoft is dealing drugs in the black market! The U.S. government was behind 9/11!! Bush is watching everything you say and type!

You just don't seem to get it and you wont ever seem to get it.

*Runs Away*

TBH you are right sinkoman, and after this I'll try to control my... desire to spam.

I think we {the whole fourm} just have to tread the line between HL2.net bad humor and spam...

for gods sake, its the gen off topic chat thread. its okay to spam there, but i think you must not have post counts added there.

Impossible.

Hay guys, heard about the Sony PS3?

moar like bs3

am i rite?

No, it's not ok to spam there. It's ok to discuss non-HL2-related topics there.

I especially hate spam by people who've joined in the past year, and are just trying to emulate the senior members, and i'm sure the majority of the board can agree with me here.

I agree, and I think that if the mods become stricter on it, it'll filter out the really bad spam that people THINK is going to be funny, but isn't.

There are instances where offtopic jokes play perfectly into the thread, but usually it just derails the whole thing.

I suggested an idea a while back, but no one liked it.

Spam category, doesn't raise post count.

I read the thread.

Your idea would just encourage spam, and you can't contain spam. Even if you try to keep it to one board, it'll undoubtedly end up elsewhere.

No it is not ok to spam. Ever!

Totally agree there sinko :)

True enough too =]

If i had the powers i would certainly crack down more :hmph:

V-Man's Opinion

I know this is a very relevant and important subject, but why are you bumping it if it's over 2 years old!
Just sticky it if you want people to read it! :frown:
I mean seriously, who's bumping all these threads?

Having spam be a major offense would cause a lot of people to leave.

OP'ed "30-06-2007"

Check yourself, before you make rash statements - and wreck yourself.

V-Man, something is very wrong with your counters...
The opening post on this thread was '30-06-2007, 02:41 PM', which is in no way over 2 years old.

With the rest of this topic, I agree. There is a line between humour and annoyance, and crossing that line is no fun for anyone.

However, most spam type posts may well just be people wanting to contribute to a topic, but not having any way to do it, and resorting to 'that's awesome lol' or the like.

I personally think that there's a big different between spam and harmless silliness.

Spam:
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2297350&postcount=5
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2295751&postcount=2

Silliness:
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2303729&postcount=59
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2302447&postcount=4

Some posts are pointless and dumb, but funny, and nowhere near thread derailing. I see spam as posts that have abso-****ing-lutely NOTHING to do with the topic at hand, and just make the thread one big mess.

I just noticed this thread. You know it's hard to say this, but this year has been shit. Too many "noobs" come in from the Steampowered forums here. We want you not to spread your diseases and pestilence and remain in that hole that is the official Steam forums. I'm losing faith very, very fast in finding any new members that are smart or even read news. Then there are some that migrate over from the hl2world community. Their modding ability is unmatched but their attitude is completely terrible. http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=126489 It was an honest helpfull thread that was turned into a huge flame fest on me. :( Even some of the mods joined in which completly caught me off guard! Yet some new members have made me think otherwise. MRG is extremely helpfull in whatever he posts. Not only are his sentences correctly strung together, they are understandable! Sometimes we even get the noobs who it seems can barely even speak English and just speak jibberish while members say "what?! Can't even understand a word you're saying." It seems to me, the only good place now is:
  1. The General Games Section
  2. The Off-Topic Section
  3. The Hardware Section
  4. The Movie Section
  5. The Pics, videos, etc section.
And that's about it. If you go anywhere remotely out of those boundaries you will be hit by people still struggling to get past the first level of HL2. They can't look up a guide either but just have to make a thread on it. My whole point is we need to have funny, yet smart thread's and post's. It's ok to be funny! I don't want to know how many people you have ****ed in your life, what your shit this morning looked like, or who had a grisly death/accident. TBH it's turning into a giant circus that mirrors 4chan. This year I have really noticed it and has even popped up with a member posting pedo porn and was banned a month after the incident. I don't want this forum sinking into filth. It's up to the mod's and user's to decide the fate of this forum. The time is to act now.

I say implement something so that those stupid ad-bots can't register here.

And be a little more strict on spam, go nuts with warnings/infractions...

BTW hool, your sig is 6 lines long. That's two over the limit. Banned.

People actually listen to the warnings? That's news to me.

I agree with sinky though, it's a subject that needs to be cracked down on. :/

my god, that derailed flash movie is quite shocking. (offtopic, i know)

LOL read before you act on others.

How do I get it in a sentence form then? Some member has their sig saying "I have fantasies of spiders crawling on my body" or something like that. People suggested linking to the post but I really can't. The one with Danimal in fact is a xfire group conversation. The others I can't get because I forgot the thread it came from. Really don't want to delete them either. :( I also made a comment here about the hardware thread and saying some mods (Asus) were flaming too and I had a chat with him. Guess he got caught in the crossfire of things and he really didn't flame me at all. Sorry Asus.

Well I tried to put 2 quotes in each line. If you made it in my sig, then tell me what color you want to be. :P

Notice how all this was happening while I was away. I cannot be blamed for spam. I win.

To me, that thread stayed pretty much on topic, save a couple of silly pictures and Top Secret and your reaction to same, offset by comments like "lmao you guys are hilarious" and "It's this type of thread derailment that makes me smile"

Basically the same thing. Krynn even went to the trouble to make it transparent on the tan skin. Just don't see what the big deal is.

I don't have a problem with this, but some might consider it borderline offensive. Moreso than a drawing of a blue horsie, certainly.

Use the spoiler tags to get around t3h limit! :D

*Shakes fist*

Let me just find my bag of locks, giant eraser and deck of red cards.

One spammer in the site feedback forum, directly above this thread, ironically.

As far as spamming goes, I'd say that this forum is pretty much perfect. Everyone recognizes that too much spam ruins forums and makes it annoying to hold a discussion, but we also recognize that zero spam makes the forums bland and uninteresting.

We've done a good job of walking the line between rules and anarchy I guess :p
