this is EA's response:

Ms VanHorn,

I'm writing to request a clarification of serious errors FNC made in a story which aired about the video game Mass Effect. (See attachment) As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect.

Errors include the following:

Your headline above the televised story read: "New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex."

Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."

Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."

Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

Other sources used in the segment made similar incorrect statements about the game. Judging by the inaccuracy of their comments, they have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales.

>[? The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brown
Vice President of Communications
Electronic Arts, Inc.

their first mistake was appealing for Fox"news" to be fair ...dont they know that "Fair and Balanced" is just code for "we make shit up" ..this is Fox"news"

I've always wanted to make that kind of response to them.

Thank the lord.

I think its great how EA didn't mouth off. Of course, since Fox "news" is run by people dummer than snails, nothing will happen.

I wouldn't be too concerned. If you see the Fox author's book on Amazon.com, she got slammed, pwned, and wasted in the reviews. Consider the lesson learned.

Someone from EA actually said something worthy of some respect! Whodathunkit?

I'm just glad we have the BBC here. It ain't perfect, but it's nothing like as bad as Fox.

Well, we have CNN and friends too, you know, for real news. In my local listings, Fox News is adjacent to Comedy Central.

EA definitely needs to protect such a valuable acquisition. They certainly didn't have to do such a thing, but the fact that they did and that they recognize the worth of Bioware and its employees gives them a ton of formerly lost respect back imho.

Wtf at your reactions?

It's like just because EA is a terrible publisher, you guys forget that they're still a game company that wants to protect its games from slandering? That's common sense here. If not just for improving sales as opposed to letting news like this slide and hurting sales. (which it already has I'm sure)

Hurting sales?? Usually when there's such a media furor over something liek this sales go up not down! :p

I believe EA secretly owns Fox News so they can secretly carry out that evil plan.

What's the name of the women pluging her book? Or better yet the name of the book of which she is plugging.

I wanna slap those people next to the Blonde woman. Ignorant f***s

"Children are now able to find ways to access sexual situations on the internet"

OH NO! THATS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!!!

That's actually a pretty bold response, and I wouldn't expect it. I think that EA deserves some respect for this gesture. However, I highly doubt Fox will give a proper response - I'm betting on just a quick ten-second apology at the very end of the 11:30 news or so.

"Coming up on Fox News, Video game giant EA sends threatening and hostile letters to our news station. Do they have something to hide? Coming up in just a few minutes."

Many countries need to lighten up methinks. Porn is not bad before a kid is 18 and the notion that it is makes me slightly ill. It's a healthy interest people.

id like to see a mod where they replace one of those females in game with one of the anchors and she gets a money shot in the face and then told to "cook me dinner, bitch"

Always the same shit on fox. Soccer moms with make-up and microphones feel the need to rant about this they have no business ranting about. You wanna know whats messing up your kids? Your day-to-day brainwashing and the implementation of meaningless structure so one day your child can be just like you, a soul less drone who ignores the real problems of the world and focuses on a pix elated form of an ass. OH GOSH, my son played mass effect, now he masturbates all day and hits girls!!!!!

To Fox News" Shove a cattle prod in your asshole....and cook me dinner, bitch"

"Have you ever played the game?"

"no"

"then shut the **** up you over rated piece of trash, nobody cares about an opinion which is as equally justified as ripping my dick off and calling it and accidental genital separation, which is what hearing your "compelling" argument makes me want to do."

EDIT: Im sorry, this stuff just really pisses me off. Nobody wants to admit to the bigger issues, ya know, the ones that actually end lives.

Yeap.

Assuming it is true that they've been invited, I can completely understand why nobody would want to accept. It would be little more than an ambush. Fox already has its preconceptions and one would just be stepping into their line of fire, probably with another subsequent sham panel of "experts".

Battle of the Retarded Titans!

Whoever wins, we win!

We need to make this happen!.

Seriously though, for this sign of common sense and you know, no being fags, EA gets 1-2 days of respect from me.

Lets hope they'll turn around...bu doubtful, its only common sense the giant of factory line game development would protect its commercial interests.

EA and Fox should settle this...

IN A CAAAAGE MAAATCH!!!

God, this makes me really p*ssed off, I don't understand why older adults cannot accept the fact that video games....are great. They constantly say 'Oh, but its basically the same as killing a person in real life...' but it isnt, in a game there are infinite possibilities and killing a person in the game is shown to be bad by the gore etc which is shown. All of those people who are just dicks and say 'We never had anything like that in MY day, its all shooting and killing and blowing people up' really just need to learn to listen to people and stop badmouthing video games before they see the immense effort and technology build into games to make them so good.

What they were bad mouthing Mass Effect for in that news broadcast is completely wrong, I have mass Effect and I have done that scene, there is no material that would offend anyone playing the game. The scene is barely on the screen 20 seconds, there is no frontal nudity, the player chooses to have sex and when was the last time you saw a kid play GTA and then go round with a machine gun shooting at gangs...Or have sex in mass effect and then go out the house and have sex with a blue alien lady...

Lets make one or two things clear...

Older adults must imbrace the future/technology/gaming.
Fox News needs to shut up and get a grip on wtf they are talking about, Here in the UK we get 'A man has been shot today outside somewhere in someplace', in the 'US of A' its all 'Ok, a mother phoned in today because she was too fat and needed something to complain about, so she chose a slightly nude scene in a video game...'

Its ridiculous...:hmph:

excuse me? my in laws have a wii ..my father in law is 67 and loves the wii ..and women over 40 are the majority of those who play online games ..granted that includes everything from minesweeper to word puzzles

anyways, dont generalise ..it's the conservartive ninnies who have these sort of attitudes ..it's not "old" people in general

that's just a stupid oversimplification

You need to get a grip and understand that Fox perfectly well understands what they are doing. Fox is not a news service it's a propaganda service.

ea should make condems about fox shows

"24 promotes public shootouts because it shows a person whit a gun in a street" or stuff like that

lol I am defending EA
