episode 1 and half life source look up/down problem

i wanted to play half life 2 so much i bought a new computer to play it. after i bought the christmas gift pack with hl2 hl source and hl2e1 with counter strike source i was saddened to learn i had to download it and with only a dial-up connection at the time i was pissed. well, i now have high speed, i've downloaded the game data for source, episode 1 and half life 2 and the only one that works good is half life 2. source and episode 1 both have a problem with the look up and down keys, i tried binding them to the keys i usually use and it doesn't work. the mouse works fine for looking but i really don't like taking my hand off the keyboard to look around during a gunfight. does anyone know how to fix this problem so i can use the same keys as half life 2 or is it unfixable. help me please, the half life series is my favourite computer game.

As far as I can determine, you never use your mouse, but want to keep your hands on the keyboard at all times?

When you say "don't want to take your hand off the keyboard during a gunfight", surely that's irrelevant if you hand was already off i.e. on your mouse.

What the hell is wrong with using your mouse for looking whenever? It's far more intuitive, quicker and more accurate than using your keys.

If you like the settings of HL2, and you want them in EP1, then just copy over the Config.cfg file. If this is what you want to do, then say so and i'll tell you how. Your post is quite confusing, so i don't really get what you want.

first, i wasn't trying to bind two functions to the same key. i use page up to look up and page down to look down. second using the mouse and keyboard at the same time is vary frustrating when i use the numpad to move and the left control and alt keys for firing.

Woah, why are you doing that? Your making the controls unnecessary complicated. What your supposed to do is move around using the keyboard(for example w,a,s,d or arrow keys) and look and fire with the mouse(Use the mouse to aim, and click the mouse to shoot). Hence one hand on the keyboard and one the the mouse, . Mybe someone here can help you, but your method is really strange and difficult, good luck with it.

actually all my game keys are uniform so it's easier to play for me. no matter what game i'm playing, it's the same controls. it's a little annoying to reset the keys after an install but that way i don't have to remember different keys every time i play a differant fps. do the looking keys work for anyone for half life 2 episode 1 and half life source. i'm wondering if i delete the data and redownload and install might help but if it's not just me then it's a problem with the game itself.

I would guess that yes, you are alone with this problem, you're the only one stupid enough to refuse to use a mouse in a PC FPS.

It's like complaining that you can't seem to steer your car with two pieces of rope, and that you don't want to use the steering wheel.

Frankly it would be easier if you did learn a new set of keys. The time you spend changing them cannot be worth it. Seriously, just use w for forward, s for backwards, a for left and d for right. It will make your life so much easier... weird person.

Don't take McBane seriously. Hell, don't even pay any attention to McBane. But I wouldn't try to blow your own horn, either. That's bound to cause an argument.

There's a reason the majority of users use the mouse. It's because most of them find it easier. I'm suggesting you at least try it and attempt to get used to it. The keys and game are designed that you use them this way. As an example I didn't like using the wasd keys when I was younger, instead preferring to use the cursor keys. I was incredibly reluctant to change, but it certainly benefited me that I did, and I recommend you try to change, too.

I have no other suggestions, other than you follow Pitz' advise.

actually i use the numpad keys. 8 is forward, 4 is left, 6 is right and 2 is back. but trust me, i'de prefer to use the keyboard if possible if this reinstall doesn't work i may switch to the mouse. i have the entire collection of half life 1 and all expansion packs so source isn't a big priority, plus not using notarget is a drawback to source. and yes i am a cheater. i prefer the game experiance rather than getting frustrated at dieing all the time. it's just the way i am. i have thought of switching keys off and on but as i mentioned before i've been using these keys for ALL my games for over 10 years so i've gotten attached to using them. but if i can't get the bug out i may just have to switch the key's but like i said, only if i can't fix this problem.

and i probably should'nt bring out my intellegence cards, it can create an argument, and one particular person should not be regarded as i just signed up here yesterday morning to try and fix this problem so i don't know anyone here yet. i've been a member of alot of forums in my time and there have been some assholes that think they're the best at everything and these guys usually push it way to far and get banned. in one forum one member made wild acusations about another senior member and openly attacked her thus getting himself banned. he's tried to sign up a few times with different usernames but has been easily identified and banned again. this forum is an older one as does not use current forum software that we are used to in most forum's like this so it's hard to get them. i promised myself that i would not become one of these people and i am a fairly good guy who had a lot of friends in school but i can be arrogant at times so i appologise to mc bain and everyone who may be offended at my last post.

What are you implying? The forum software for this board has recently been updated in the past couple of months. What I believe you are misunderstanding is the use of an entirely different piece of software altogether. There are several different programs which can be used on forums such as these including phpBB, which is free, vbulletin, which is what we use here, and IPB, which could be what you're used to.

That's the normal configuration, and a potentially easier solution. I'm sorry I can't help you with your keys issue, but you'll probably be glad you switched to a mouse before long.

as for the look up down problem, if someone can solve it great but for now i'll use the new keys for episode 1, but i probably won't switch all my other games. i just hope i can get used to it quickly.

If you start using it for all your Half-Life games, you'll get used to it faster. You might find deathmatch easier, as well. Then, when you get used to it, you can start using it other games.

Anyway I just wanted to say that i know few persons who play lots of fps games just using a keyboard. I found it unbelievable but my friend passed Far Cry and Doom 3 without moving a mouse. It's weird, if I would now go play original doom (which doesn't support mouse) I probably wouldn't be able to beat it.

A: There is a notarget command in Source.
B: Perhaps you wouldn't die all the time if you used the control method that the game was designed to use. People aren't just saying that you should be using the mouse to aim because they want to be mean to you. Using the mouse is a lot more intuitive, fluid and much easier once you are used to it.

i know there's a notarget command in source but the friendly npc's don't see you when you need them to open a door and i got tired of switching it on and off so i left it off, it's a totally differant experience.

You can bind it to a key so that you don't have to open the console to turn it on and off.

First, before you load up any levels go in the console and enter:

cl_mouselook 0

This command has to be set when you're not running any levels (before you start any maps/load game)!

Set your keys in the options ("look up", "look down", "turn left", "turn right"). You'll need to lower your mouse sensitivity, otherwise it jerks like hell. Also, when you do that command ("
cl_mouselook 0") you cannot use your mouse to look around, so it has to be all keys.

I could understand you defending your method of using the keyboard to look around and aim, if you WERE GOOD AT IT. It sounds like you can't do shit with it, and you're looking for more of a movie to watch than a game. You prefer turning off the enemy intelligence to get a game experience? LOL. That makes zero sense, sorry.

You need to start getting used to the mouse immediately. You can NOT play FPS games with the keyboard. You have no chance of surviving with the keyboard alone, this you just told us. So why are you using it.

I can just picture you strolling through levels, seeing an enemy, stopping to aim at him for about 6 seconds, then firing and killing him. Woo. Fun time. Now that's a game experience.

i've been playing them for years with the keyboard and have beaten many games with JUST the keyboard. the original half life games are among thoses i've beaten. i only use the mouse to make sniper shots really. i tried playing half life 2 episode 1 using a new key configuration that included the mouse to look and fire but someone showed me how to fix the problem. there are people who play games just as i do, alot of them, it's a shame your not open to it.

I'd be open to it if it actually worked for you. According to you, you need cheats just to survive the game. That doesn't sound like it works for you.

I also don't expect you to answer me on how you think cheating in games gives you more gameplay, when in fact it does the opposite.

i don't need cheats to survive the game. i like the game experience over worrying if i'll survive the next part and being constantly frustrated when i keep dieing at a part. i've tried the games without cheats and i've starting playing half life 2 without no target and i've noticed it's an entirly different game when the computer see's you. more things happen. i'm gonna try the half life 1 series like this for the first time ever and i've had the games for years. i've been trying more of my games without notarget but i still use it for stealth levels when alarms are a factor. it's a lifesaver on return to castle wolfenstien. like i said, it's not that i need cheats to play, i just like the security of joyful playing rather than "i wanna put my fist through the moniter" playing.
