I recently re-installed Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and it seems that I can't use AA in any game or else this happens:

It happens anytime I turn AA on in any game, I've updated my drivers and I don't think I've changed anything.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB btw

I think you've got bigger problems than your AA if Splinter Cell is looking like that

Thats what happened when I tried to run Grim Fandango on my new pc.

Good job not understanding his post.

On a related note: I have no idea what causes this. You had better try posting in / searching an official splinter cell forum.

.bog.

I checked in the Splinter Cell forums and didn't find anything related to AA, or atleast not my card, I might try uninstalling Splinter Cell to see if it's a problem caused by the game.

I tried to run whatchamacallit... that WWII halflife 2 mod. Oh yeah, day of defeat. It did that to me when I tried playing it. Not any other games though.

Here is a few pics from SC:CT

I don't think it's a heating problem because if I disable AA the game runs fine, it's just when I enable it that I get this messed up shit on my screen

Weird drivers? Have you tried using the Omega drivers?

It may be due to artifacts. Are you overclocking? and do you have official drivers?

I used to get checkered blocks on my screen when I overclocked my 9800SE. I've since bought a 6600GT

I've not changed my gpu in anyway, so I doubt I'm overclocking, and the drivers were official, I guess I'll try uninstalling Splinter Cell, or restoring back to before I installed it

USE drive cleaner, then reinstall the latest driver.....

QFT.

Also it still could be an overheating problem just that when you turn on AA it heats the card up just a bit too much so it starts to artifact. Try leaving your case open to see if it fixes the problem.

What do I choose under the "Cleaning Selection" drop-down box?

**EDIT**

I went through and picked everything with ATI in the name, now this happens when I install the drivers

Hoo

fu.cking

ray

I installed the Omega drivers now my card is disabeled and I can't re-enable it, direct x isn't working, and I can't run any games....

**EDIT**

Reinstalled the drivers from ATI and it works now...AA is still broken...

I'm out of ideas

This sounds very much like a hardware issue.

I say this because I had a similar issue and I ended up having to buy a new card. The card was overheating in my case. I had an X850XT that I exchanged. ATI has had poor heating solutions, however, the card I currently have has been great.

First of all.....none of the Splinter Cell games are compatible with AA to the best of my knowledge. Too lazy to go look for a source on that one, but believe me.....I don't think anti-alising works on ANY of the Splinter Cell games. I know, because a while ago I tried to get it to work as well and subsequently failed. Saw on several different forums that Splinter Cell and AA will just not work in tandem.

As to why Call of Duty would also be affected.....I have no idea.

Played the demo of SC:CT, I can tell you that it does support AA, and it works like a charm.

Splinter Cell supports AA if you use the 1.1 shaders, it doesn't with the 2.0 shaders

I guess it's not that big of a problem that I need to buy a new card, I am pretty sure that it isn't an overheating problem because I just spent $200 on more fans and a bigger case, also my card doesn't feel that hot

You can use AA in 2.0 as long as you turn HDR off in the options. No idea why that is though.

How Farcry and Splinter Cell 3 put in HDR required a Sm3.0 card. When it was released the only card that had SM3.0 and could do HDR was the Nvida 6600\6800. This could could not apply AA to the buffer that they were using. The 7800GTX still cannot do AA with HDR. The 1800 and 1900 ATI series though can. Though their has not been a patch for Splinter Cell 3 to detect these cards ability to do that.

But Basically up until the 1800 and 1900 Cards theres been a hardware limitation on applying AA to HDR.

Valve had to redo there HDR equation(s) many times in order to get the right one that offered AA, more than 3.0 cards, and Speed. You must also remember, CryTek and Ubisoft look to Nvidia rather than ATI. Valve looks to ATI rather than Nvidia. So CryTek and Ubisoft just implemented enough so the latest Nvidia cards could do it. While Valve had to create an HDR that would ATI cards could do. Since Valve had to figure out a different way to implement HDR, they found a way that offered Speed and AA also.
