Help!!! Computer Keeps Rebooting!

ok, my computer keeps rebooting due to unknown reasons.

i have tried cleaning it, updating the graphics driver and such.

it reboots with no sound, no nothing. the screen just goes black.

when i log in, it just reboots. or when that doesn't happen, any program that i use(internet exploer, hl2, ect) just makes my f---ing computer reboot.

:( :( :(

if i don't fix this, my dads gonna kill me.
 
Has it always done this? What was the last thing on youy machine you remember changing?

Could it be the result of overclocking?(I don't know much about that)

well, updating the graphics driver files...

i never mess with the BIOS sttings..
 
if it was set to 220 it could fry the board/ maybe not even boot up. What are your system specs, and if you can boot into Safe Mode and uninstall the drivers and install the older ones.
 
ASUS P4P800 SE, 512mb ram, 2.8ghz cpu, microsoft XP, AMI type BIOS
 
OH, im so dumb. Check the Event Viewer, that should show what the prob could be. Boot into safe mode and try. Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer. Then look at Application and System files and look for a RED ERROR thing, or a Yellow Exclamation point. If you can post what some of the errors might be. Event Viewer is perhaps the greatest part of 2000/XP/2003 troubleshooting.

Make sure you are on the Administrator account for the PC :)

Tbh, I think it's your power supply!

either power supply or loose wires/connections.

Or the motherboard is touching the case.
 
We had a guy in the shop a couple of weeks ago who'd screwed his motherboard directly to the case.. and wondered why it didn't work :P
 
don't forget, many viruses (such as MS.Blaster, welchia etc) reboot your pc periodically. do a quick virus scan just to see.

i don't think the mb is touching the case though......

my computer now doesn't reboot when run with case open.

and when not running hl2, cod, ect.

but it does not reboot in diablo2 or CS (not source)
 
Yea it seems like a heat problem. Now that's wierd because it's not a new PC and you didn't overclock... Download Motherboard monitor and tell us your temps.

Do you have a big fan on your cpu like a copper Zalman? Because sometimes, if those fans are not installed properly they lose and don't touch all the surface of the CPU (Especially if you take your case to LAN parties and move it frequently). If that's the case then you'd have to remove it, clean your heatsink and cpu, apply a new good thermal paste and then install it correctly on the CPU.
 
yea, sounds like heat to me. The video card is being pushed as hard with CS (normal) and Diablo2 cause those dont use any graphics really. Check your video card fan, blow out dust off that and off the processor. I usually pop open my case and blow out any dust off the fans, etc once every few weeks.
 
Motherboard Monitor says my CPU is at -4 degrees C. Which is weird because I'm pretty sure that it isn't running at that because I only have the stock heatsink, but my case has 1 120mm fan in the front, 1 80mm on the side, and 2 80mm on the back. Here is a screenshot of it. My mobo is a GA-K8NS (non pro). In the config I chose "GaK8N Pro">All Revisions.
 
The flaw in motherboard monitor is that it relies upon your motherboard sensors being accurate.

In this case, they aren't :)
 
in the BIOS it shows my CPU temp around 29 celcius. This other program I downloaded shows the CPU at the same temp when idle. It jumps to 32 under heavy load (HL2, Doom3)

My motherboad must not be in Motherboard Monitor's directory or w/e u wanna call it.
 
IRC, windows 2k and XP reboot automatically if you get a kernel error that would otherwise cause a BSOD... right-click my computer, click properties, the advanced tab, click startup and recovery, and check to see if "automatically restart" is checked near the bottom. If it is, uncheck it, and if you get a BSOD when you might have otherwise rebooted, write down the error message and google it.
 
Have you, by any chance, installed any Div3 drivers recently? I had the exact same problem (Couldn't watch my pirated FLCL episodes, so I downloaded Div3 drivers, and my PC kept rebooting until I uninstalled them). If so, uninstall 'em and you'll be fine.
 
when i just leave my computer alone, 27 to 31C.

when i play cs(not source), 40+. (no reboot)

when i play hl2, 45+ (before rebooting)

also, i only have 2 sensors that seem to work in MBM5 (sensor #3 says that my computer's temp is 128C)

and i don't know what div3 is so i don't think so.

my psu says LPC-300ATX 12V P4 on the side.

edit: the thing is, my comp heats very rapidly.

You should call your local computer geek and ask him to give you a hand,you've been having this problem for the past month and posting didn't get you anywhere.

(that i know of)

only thing that works is to run with case open so overheating is my #1 suspect

and edit: it doesn't reboot frequently now. only when i play hl2 or CoD.

make sure you haven't got your bios / system set to automatically shut down when CPU hits a certain temperature (or if you have - it needs to be higher than 45 ... more like 65 / 70)

From what you're saying - it definately sounds like a temperature issue. If the case being open helps, perhaps you need a better air flow system inside. Try getting a big desk fan and pointing it at the open case before you play HL2 - see what happens. If that helps, then look into getting some decent fans / extractors for your system.

Is your system dusty? If so get a can of compressed air and clean it out real good.
Also if I'm understanding correctly you said this all started when you updated your video drivers, right? You can use driver cleaner and then install the latest drivers just to make sure that isn't the problem. Here's a site, just follow the instructions closely:

um by updating, i mean not changing the actual video card but just clicking on the update button......

no it will default to the standard windows vga output, which will be a really low res and about 3 colours, so will look horrible. But still, gives you a chance to install some alternative drivers.

Not sure how keeping the case open would help with a driver issue, but stabbing in the dark, could be that the driver does some kind of temperature checking and causes a halt if it gets critical. Did you turn off the automatic reboot on BSOD as someone suggested earlier?
 
well, i couldn't find the automatic reboot thingy.............

and, if i deleted the files, how can i reinstall?
 
if you are talking about deleting your video drivers, just download the newest ones onto your desktop before you uninstall the old ones and it should be pretty easy to get them reinstalled.

perhaps i should wait for that SP2 cd to arrive and install sp2.......... (1 month)
 
it doesn't reboot now that i have disabled hardware acceleration for gc.

but now i can't play games... :(
