Shit, what has happened to me? I used to be fit, and now I've gained 50 pounds. Its gotten to the point that I just hate to look at myself.

So, after I've failed to get an internship this summer, I've decided to use my time instead losing weight and getting healthy again. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm planning on just writing down everything I eat and running and/or lifting weights every day. As long as I can stick to it, I think I'll lose weight...I've done it before. Its a painfully slow process.

It's actually not that hard to lose weight IMO. It just takes discipline, and mental control. I no longer eat breakfast or lunch. Some people consider that crazy, but I eat when I get home, and then I have dinner and I am set for the day.

It can be hard at first.

God gave you index fingers for a reason, boy-o!

Try going back into an old habit you had (when you were fitter). If not, simple changes in your daily diet can help. Also exercising.

That's actually a very bad habit and is one of the leading causes of acquired diabetes.

Yeah dude, I don't believe that's healthy.

As one of the non fat people, I have to say that I just don't understand it. If you don't want to be fat, why not just stop being fat? It's not like trying to fly, it's entirely possible.

P.S. What is the deal with everyone asking for help with their life? There are about 6 threads titled "help me --".

Hey, its worked out for some people, plus its not like you have to answer the threads (though it is nice to).

I dunno, one of the ways I kept fit was by joining a sport were I was around friends and thus happy, regardless of how bad I was at the sport.

Thats what hes doing.

I know, but its not that easy when you're socialized into eating way too much and doing way too little. My parents and my siblings are all overweight, some bordering on obesity, and its just what I'm used to, I suppose. I've never been in any sport, never excercised for the hell of it, never had a membership to a gym, never skipped a meal or avoided eating 3 or 4 meals worth inbetween. Its like changing your entire lifestyle, like learning a new language. It took me over a year the first time before I got used to the routine of actually doing something in the afternoons outside instead of sitting at a desk all day, and took even longer for me to enjoy eating healthily. And after that I really did enjoy it. I didn't know what was wrong with me before. Then after I got thin, I gradually started eating more and more until now I'm eating like 3,500 calories a day and doing absolutely nothing.

Goddamn, I never thought I'd become a yo-yo dieter, but here I am, at the top of the sine wave, getting ready to plunge back down again for how long? Three years? One year?

EDIT: And here we are again, 10:30 PM and I haven't moved from this chair since 3.

Im fat too :(

Fatty group hug!

I plan on going bike riding in the mornings from now on so that I do some sort of regular exercise. **** running though. I hate that shit.

wow, 50 lbs in a year is a lot of weight to gain, even if you just went nuts on eating food. Since end of puberty, my lowest was 145, highest was 162. Right now I am around 156.

I don't see how that's really unhealthy of me, instead of having 3-4 meals a day, I have 2 meals (one in the later afternoon and one in the later evening) with a couple snacks throughout the day. And it's not for reasons of "ooo, I wanna be skinny", it's just because I often don't feel like eating during the earlier times of the day.

I am usually not in the mood for breakfast, or don't have time for it, and same goes for lunch. (I eat a lot more in the summer because there is no school in my way)
I exercise quite often as well.

I'm sure you guys have a validated reason, I just don't know it...

Not a year. Its been about four years since. I had lost 45 pounds by that time, and had begun my climb upward.

That's not the point. The point is, eating only one large meal a day wrecks havoc on your pancreas. The pancreas often builds up insulin when you don't eat, and then secretes many times too much if you only eat one large meal, especially if it contains sugar. Over time, this could lead to insulin resistance. But at a healthy weight and with exercise it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I think he was talking about how Shadow gained that much. Whats insulin do?

Insulin causes cells to take up and use glucose. It is released by the pancreas when sugar is present in the blood. Diabetes can result when cells become resistant to insulin and no longer take up glucose, leading to lots of very extreme problems.

Uh oh. I better stop doing what ZT is doing then.

My friend told me something clever last night. He said that often I ask him for help because even though I know what to do, I need someone to tell me to do it.

I guess I should put some effort aside to eat a little something in the morning and at lunch time. It can be really annoying though, sometimes I don't feel like it at all.

wurd.

That sucks dude. :(

BTW, I used to be quite a fatty myself, a yo-yo dieter even. It's all in the mind really. I no longer live-to-eat, but eat-to-live. (Although "eating-to-live" can be tasty at times. :E)

I'm much more fit now than I was in high school too. Then, I was 220 at 5'7. I was a short, fat guy. Now, I'm 200 even, but much more firm and energetic than I was then.

After school, I got more physical because I got a BS warehouse job at a meat packaging plant. Lost about 15 lbs. or so. I really dropped weight like a crack whore though when I stated riding my bike (which was my favorite exercise) for miles like I did. I got down to about 168 until I wrecked it because of some douchbag idiot driver out here where we live.
(I put his window out and got taken to court. I'm very short tempered. :E)

I was doing lots of physical landscaping and moving work at the time too, plus I was given a gym membership for a Christmas present one year, so I started lifting weights and stuff about three times a week for 6 months or so.
Up until now, I've mantained a fairly good weight. (I'm now back at 200 lbs. even, and just had a huge plate of shepherd's pie earlier). So I know your pain of "yo-yo" dieting theotherguy. Of course, if I were you, I'd buy a bike and start riding through town at least once a week.

The key is finding an exercise that's right for you, which doesn't involve bending your elbow and moving your jaws of course. ;)

Cant running be bad for you when you're not thin/fit? Like on your knees and shit?

Runnings not really good your anybody period for this reason from what I've heard. Human legs weren't designed to run, but hey, the military guys are still made to do it. :|

Power walking (fast, big steps) is much more effective tbh. This way, one can maintain a rapid heartbeat without overtiring.

Basically excerise and eat better shit.
If you are seriously fat, swimming is a good excerise, since you can float. You must also have patience. Its takes quite a while.

Also, as has been stated above, walking is an easy and effective excerise.

You heard wrong, exactly opposite of what everyone says. Running is pretty much exactly what humans are built to do. Look at the human body. 2 long legs for efficiency, massive quads, upright position to maximize cooling air flow over the body, sweat glands, arched feet that act like springs. Humans are among the top of all animals for endurance. Sure dogs and antelope can sprint fast for a short while, but they get tired fast.

DRAGONSHIRT!

But we werent supposed to live to our 80s and 90s. Ive heard that people who run regularly experience messed up kneecaps when they get into their older ages, and it makes it painful and hard to walk.

If you take anything to extremes you are going to injure your body. Any sport at all has a massive amount of strain injuries when you take it to the Olympic or the top level of competition. By the same logic hockey, football, swimming, rowing, bicycling, gymnastics, dancing, tennis, frisbee, golf, drinking, rugby, weight lifting, discus, sprinting, and lawn darts are all bad for you. But in reality it's only when you take these things in excess.

I've been skinny all my life, and always wanted to be strong so I could destroy puny mortals.

but I'm not. There are basically 3 body types. Fat, skinny, and muscular.

anyway, the grass is always greener. I've even had really big dudes tell me that skinny looks better... and I've always wished I had a little more meat and fat on me.

First thing is to accept that you will never be (insert who you want to look like here). you are you.

Second thing to do is try to tip the scale towards the weight you want to be by doing what it takes.

But don't try so hard that you end up causing damage to yourself because you will regret that. Things like bolemia (sp. forcing yourself to throw up) and steroids is what I'm referring too.

And that is all you can do. Good luck my friend.

I do the same, although I can't say it's to lose weight. Just ain't hungry for the most part of the day, and eating early makes me feel ill.

I'm told it's really bad to do though. Also something about how your body ends up intaking more when you eat dinner because your body thinks it's starved or something. I don't know if that part's true though.

EDIT: I see I've already been beaten repeatedly on that point. =P

Could you teach me how to gain weight? Try as I might, I simply can't

*Shakes fist at all those who easily gain weight*

Eat a Burger King "king sized" meal three times a day along with what you normally eat and sit around and do nothing all day like many of us already probably do. Guaranteed to pack on the lbs. then. ;)

I have a "high metabolism" my ass. If this doesn't do it, then you might want to get checked for worms. 1 out of 4 people have worms and don't even know it. :P

it's been said that your body will always try to go back to whatever whieght you were when you become an adult, so changing your body weight after this can be challenging. However, most people gain some weight when they start getting older and less active... I guess around 40 years old, and by 50, have gained even more, and by 60 or so, that is about where it stops.

Anyway, I'm skinny too man, and the only way I have found to gain weight was to be active, because this gives me a huge appetite. If you don't work hard, you won't feel like eating much.

keep in mind that you lose 1 lb of muscle for every week that you don't really use that muscle. The body will constantly adjust to what you do. So if you barely ever remain standing for long periods of time - for example - your legs aren't going to be very strong. This is the way the body remains efficient. On the other hand, if you stand all day, like at work, you are going to have some pretty strong legs and ass.

A lot of people use weight lifting if they don't actually have something they need to use the muscle for.

People that work as laborers for example, don't need to do weight lifting to do this work, because their body maintains this muscle because it needs to.

I think a lot of it depends on the amount of exercise you do. I eat a stackload of junk, my main form of liquid intake is pepsi max, and while I'm not very fit, I'm still not fat in the slightest, but the point is I run two or so km a night.

Whatever you eat, work it off. But in the early stages its probably better to cut down on the food.

Eat less, move more.

hey fatty lay off the donuts :)

jebus 50lbs is a lot to pack on ..were you a fatty before you gained the 50lbs? A friend of mine lost 40-50lbs in about 4 months just by working out/only eating 3 meals a day

This is complete and utter bull shit. I can't believe you just said it. Just because you failed at whatever you were trying to accomplish doesn't stop people everyday from being stronger and healthier.

If you want to lose weight, you have to exercise. Cardiovascular exercises which increase the heart rate to high speeds and sustaining that raised level for more than twenty minutes. When you exercise, you first burn sugars- immediate expendable energy made for fight or flight encounters. After awhile, though, you run out of sugar and you start burning fat for energy. Burning fat means less weight, less weight means a slimmer physique and your desired goals.

Diet. Diet diet diet. Eat right.

Sleep. 8 hours a night. Everynight. All three of these are equally as important. Without one, you will accomplish little.

Do this for 6 weeks and you will lose weight. Look to yourself for motivation but look to reliable sources for knowledge on the subject.

____________________________________________________________

If you want to gain weight...

Eat. 6 meals a day with three hour intervals. Large meals. Double your caloric and protein intakes. Eat a balanced variety of foods (but god dammit shove that protein down). Research a proper dietary plan for weight gain.

Resistance training- high weight, low rep. Compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, pullups, pushups, bench press, military press. Maintain proper form. Research a proper schedule.

Sleep. 8 hours a day.

It's really about dedication. I have found no provable "short cut" and it will take a while to see desired results. But 6 weeks to 6 months is a skip in time compared to the rest of your life.

I swear to god I'll do this after my exams, my ****ing A Level exams which is the end of my goddamn school life is over. I really need to gain.

Alright, day 1 of new diet. Got on the scale and discovered that I lost two pounds since I last weighed. Great, so I only have 48 to lose. Woo. hooh. Ate a bannana and a piece of 35 calorie toast for breakfast, managed to stay out of the kitchen since then. Going to go walk a mile before school now.
