Ok it's actually just a cheap marketing thingy for a film called Contagion where they spelled out the name of the film in a giant petri dish and let the bacteria and fungi grow in that shape:

[Insert viral marketing jokes here]

Heh, that's kind of clever.

As for the movie, from the trailer it just sounds like Andromeda Strain.

Obviously I am going to go and see this film now based on nothing but the fact that it was advertised with bacteria and fungi.

Oh wait, no.

Too bad the billboard is way more exciting than the movie.

The largest point of advertising is to make sure people know (and are reminded) that your product exists. Because of this unique advert that I posted on this forum at least a few people who didn't know about this film now do. Due to many similar postings on the internet many more people now know about the film than would otherwise have. Therefore the advertising is successful.

They've already been promoting the heck out of this on tv though.

Part of me wants to believe they did the bacteria signs mostly for fun.

Well I'd never heard of it and I still haven't seen anything else about it since (I don't watch much TV anymore except a few specific things).
