lord of the rings trilogy -- best films of the decade?

They're not the best films of the decade, but that "super trailer" was very well done.

They're not even in the top 25 films I've seen this decade...

Not best films of the decade.

But best trilogy of the decade I would certainly agree.

Matrix - blew
Star Wars Ep1-3 - ok

Are we talking about 90s decade or 1996-2006?? Cause 00 hasnt been a decade yet...

I think he may mean so far this decade, or something. But if he means 96-06, hell, I don't thing Rings would make it on a Top 50, or hell, even Top 100 list for me. They were good movies, but they were hyped way more than they deserved to be. I'll agree that it was probably the best trilogy this decade however, unless of course, the Vengeance trilogy counts.

Cool Trailer by the way...

LOTR is a wonderful, amazing story. But in terms of my personal taste, I dont care much for medival fantasylands so I wouldnt consider it the best film of this decade.

It doesnt bother me that LOTR was over-hyped and really it makes perfect sense to me why it won all those oscar awards. LOTR is the ultimate fantasy film that people been craving for a long time. It had everything - adventure, action, comedy, romance, mystery, just everything that makes a movie so enjoyable. The books and movies are just prime examples of the greatest human story ever told. And for those that complained it was just too long or was too slow, LOTR (just like the books intended) is a fictional world with a story, not just a movie - you either buy into it or you dont. When a film becomes a different world, it doesnt get any better than that as far movies go. Just ask all the star wars fanatics why they love their movies so much.

But lets think why Star Wars didnt win all those oscars overall...

I love them. When I first saw the first movie I fell in love.
I'd never read the books before I saw the movies, they missed a lot out of the movies from the books. But if they went and followed the book word for word, the movies would last forever.

As movies, they're great. Tell the story really well and it's not just all action. Like PoeticRocker said, it's got everything.
Probably my favourite films of all time. Great stuff, love them.

Now only if they'd make the Hobbit into a movie :)

I can't think of any better films that have come out in recent memory.

The LOTR movies are some of my favorite.

The individual, real trailers for the movies are also spectacular and I keep them just for the sheer awesomeness.

Now to watch this trailer.

EDIT: It was an alright trailer... however, it was too jarring from one group of scenes to the next with the music...

I stand by the original trailers for each three movies. Those are pieces of art.

I can't find them on youtube. People only have their mutilated versions up on there.

I can only find the return of the king version. They all used to be on the apple/quicktime website, but I can only access this one apparently.

Great series, certainly one of the best i've seen.

They were awesome movies, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them the best of the decade... o_o

I haven't seen enough movies to say, really. But I did seriously adore those movies, and I would call them the best book to movie translations ever.

Come to think of it, I think Donnie Darko is my favorite film of the decade. Perhaps even the best.

Most certainly my favourite films of... well, all time probably. Theres tons of films I love, all from different times, but these really stood out to me. I actually honestly can't think or probably any more than 30 films that have been that groundbreaking to me.

Is Amelie of 2001? If so, that's my best "film of the decade".

Lord of the Rings .... best film of the decade? Are you ****ing kidding me?

Most popular maybe - but far, far from the best. The movies weren't even particularly good, which was compounded by the ridiculous level of hype.

Films are in my top 10 favourites. I love the extended editions except i still dont like how they copped out and killed Saruman.

:sniper:

They were awesome, the action was certainly better than the fighting sences in the book, but the rest wasn't as good as the book. Oh wait it was all action...

Great films, but certainly not the best. It would have been difficult for a good director to have made bad films from the LOTR books. It's a good story, but they're nothing special. I must say the music is great though.

Good films, but far from the best. Yeah, they're good fantasy films, but its just...too simple for me. Good vs Evil is good and all, but I always found LOTR made it too simple and likely have influenced any future fantasy films, like His Dark Materials, which looks to be completely leaving out all criticism of religion messages present in the trilogy.

I watched Fellowship last night the from beginning to end with no breaks and then rewound and watched my favourite bits over again. I love it so.

Do the same with Two Towers tonight.

I agree this this

Thank you!

From that site, I believe they were these ones...

Fellowship:

Two Towers:

Return of the King:

The Two Towers and Return of the King ones are ESPECIALLY awesome. Art just in themselves.

I always thought they were kinda meh, I liked them, but meh. All the hype over them just got annoying after a while.

Ditto.

Best trilogy of the last decade....sure. Best individual movies? No way. Not even close.

You guys never saw the super trailer when it released? Hmm, guess I am more of a geek than I had at first imagined! :cheese:

They are certainly 3 of my all-time favorite films because I love adventure. Star Wars and Indiana Jones are my other favs of all-time (trilogy-wise at least). The Vengeance trilogy was sheer beauty too, though not a traditional trilogy.

These movies deserve every bit of praise that was heaped upon them because nobody thought this could ever be done, let alone done so well. The book is one of the best books of the 20th century and doing it justice was a seemingly impossible task. Good for Peter and everyone involved!

LOTR captures what I loved about movies in the 80's - when going to the cinema was an event, an adventure. Movies were fun - i'd see Star Wars or Ghost Busters and come out buzzing from the sheer escapism. Mad Max was blasting down the highway and Danny Glover was too old for this shit.

LOTR is up there with the best of these (i'd stick it just behind Indy), which makes it just plain awesome :)

lol! best films of the decade? popcorn entertainment good for what it is but it's definately not the best or even in the top 100

I've always wondered why so many movie buffs don't recognize the LOTR trilogy (taken as a whole) as a good film. I think the fact that it is so popular among teenagers and geeks tends to diminish, by association, their enthusiasm for this type of material. Deep inside, they like it, but they will deny it just to stand out from the crowd as the intellectual cinephiles they think they are.

You're so totally right man. People who say they don't like The Trilogy because it's nothing more than an overly long slightly pretentious popcorn adventure that thinks it's much more important than it really is are just in denial. In reality everyone thinks the same way you do, and when they say otherwise it's out of a desperate attempt to be different.

Who wouldn't like a story about a guy throwing a ring into a volcano, especially after it was divided up into three 3+ hour long movies? Personally, the third one was my favorite ... it just kept getting better with every ending.
