I'm rather surprised I haven't seen this on the forum (I didn't search, just quickly glanced down the list).
As most people know, the now four year old toddler was abducted over a week ago. She was snatched from the Algarve village Praia da Luz.
Now, even though I can't change this, and won't help, WHY did the parents leave the three youngsters? If the toddler never returns, they are going to regret this for the rest of their lives.
The bad thing is, its her birthday today. How sad.

Your views please.

Why leave your children in an unprotected, unsupervised ground floor apartment in the first place? I heard they did check on the children every 20 minutes or so, but how hard is it just to hire out a babysitter for an evening?

A hard lesson learnt for the parents, let's just hope someone contacts them asking for a demand of some sort in exchange for the poor kid.

To be honest, I'm bloody sick of hearing about her.
Not because I'm cruel or anything, but bad shit happens to millions of people daily - why does she get special treatment, with constant news coverage, millions pledged and practically entire police forces out looking for her?
Seems a touch overkill when usually the police don't do shit about anything. It looks like an exercise in public relations to me. Given the resources available, it's a bit like using a nuclear bomb to kill a chav.

The difference being using a nuclear weapon on any number of chavs would be ****ING AWESOME.

Well, true. But way too impersonal and dignified (remove the scum from society with the peak of technological accomplishment)...I'd go with the knife tbh.

Agreed mostly.

Celtic wore yellow armbands during their football match today. You don't see them wearing them for every British person that dies in Iraq, or anyone who goes missing in the UK, which I'm sure happens all the time.

It might be mean, but you have to look at it in perspective.

It's a prime case of sheeple. People will feel sad about something if you relentlessly bombard them with it over the news 24/7. It's like living in an episode of Eastenders...

People need something to feel bad about when they have nothing else to spend their sympathies on. It makes them feel human.

That's my guess anyway.

As to the "tragedies happen every day" thing, no shit. They always have and they always will. You can't account for every one, nor can you treat them all equally. It's on the news because it's relatable and it pulls people in, therefore it's newsworthy. Facts of life. La-da-dee, la-da-da.

I agree, they were checked on every 30 minutes, but lots of things can happen in half an hour. How long did it take for one of the towers to collapse in New York on 9/11? About 10-15 seconds?

Agree, for instance, if soldiers die in Iraq, you about it once and thats it, shows the amount of sympathy they get. Not to mention there must louds of people in asia or africa, that are kidnapped daily for sex trafficing. Plus its wishful thinking im afraid, if a little girl goes missing and the term 'white van' comes up, usually means some physcho pedo, which usually means, you never see them again. Although i hope its not the case, but its not looking good im afraid.

It's a topic that touches hearts, like the death of Princess Di or a cute puppy stuck down a well. Simple as.

You can't compare a little girl getting kidnapped to people dying in Iraq. Soldiers know what they're signing up for when they join the army. That kid didn't ask to have such irresponsible parents, or to be kidnapped. This kind of thing has to be on the news, to remind parents that this happens.

I don't agree with the 2.5 million pound ransom supplied by big names like J K Rowling and the Football player though. Their money could be much better spent, say, looking for a cure for cancer?

I'm not gonna feel more sorry for this kid than I do for the hundreds of kids that die of AIDS every day.

'A single death is a tragedy a million deaths is a statistic.'

Yeah, the 2.5 million is shocking.
If someone else goes missing in the future, and someone knows about it, they're gonna wait till a reward is on offer before turning someone in.

I dunno if I posted that already, feels like I have.

The portugese police are useless, they've admitted it themselves and they've made a catalogue of errors already with this case.

I think we (britain) should send out some professional people to deal with the search.
