Mafia 2.

maybe you are playing the wrong game, better stick to gta for your own good.

The visuals are out dated? What? Please tell me that was intended as a pun.

The visuals weren't what I quite expected. But then, I had somewhat high expectations from the teaser like last year. Plus, I've been spoilt by Valve's lip-syncing. I can bare the puppet-mouths of yesteryear, because there's little attempt to actually resemble lip movements. But the awkward movements like in this grate somewhat.

I tried playing it again yesterday on 360 but the framerate and tearing are just too bad. Any firefights cripple the fps.

Need a new pc.

Why would your PC effect your 360's performance...?

^Oh Druckles, you're just fabulous!xD

I hope you are joking and do understand that he means that he must get a new PC to play it on since it's unbearable to play the 360 version, so he wants to play the PC version instead.

So anyone got the game yet and tried it out?

I know I've been hearing mixed reviews about the game already. But it seems people are mostly disappointed by the fact that its not like GTA4 with a really open-ended city and MP. The funny thing I'm noticing is it seems mostly European game reviewers rate Mafia 2 higher than American game reviewers.

So far the game feels a lot like Mafia 1 to me. As long it has a great story that immerses me in the mob world than I won't be disappointed.

again, mafia was never about the freeroam. it's not supposed to be like grand theft auto.

Yeah exactly. A lot of reviewers are comparing it to GTA4. Of course it's inevitable though.

Downloaded it as a preload (UK don't get it unlocked until Friday) and am able to play by adding an AppID .txt file (I have bought it, it's not piracy if I own it). So far I think the atmosphere is amazing, played to Chapter 4 and everything is as I hoped it would be. The reviewers are all comparing it to open world games like GTA and completely missing the point that the whole city is just the backdrop to the linear story. The opening of the game is amazing once you arrive in Empire City.

First 2 chapters of the game (spoilers though, obviously):-

This game is fantastic. I'm 8 hours in and I havent been this hooked to a game in a long time. The setting is incredible. So many little touches make the game completely immersive. Seeing bomber planes flying overhead on their way somewhere, military supply trucks driving through the city, the weapons, the radio talking about donating scrap metal to help the cause, news reports on events happening in Europe and the Pacific. I've never felt so immersed in a game like this. The story is fantastically presented, and not as cliched and predictable as I feared a mafia-based story would be. The story is fresh, well presented, and moves at a quick pace rather than dragging out little bits to fill time like in many recent games.

Gunplay is great as I mentioned with the demo, driving is very fun when using simulation mode. Driving in the normal mode sucks, too much like GTA where cars handle perfectly all the time. Simulation makes it more in depth, forcing you to change how you drive in snow/ice or rain, not accelerating too quickly and spinning out, etc. Probably the best driving component I've ever seen in a non-racing game.

I very much recommend getting this, if you're thinking about it. Its probably going to be my personal Game of the year.

What about the fear of it simply being too short?

Well, as I said, I'm 8 hours in. I dont think its going to end any time soon, since the missions I'm doing don't seem to be suggesting any sort of climactic ending yet. Plus theres porn in it, so you could always come back for more of that. I think I missed a bunch of side jobs though. I totally forgot I could go to places to get work when not in the middle of a story mission.

Easily as long as the original Mafia if you take out the time travelling in the first ones shitty cars.

I think I missed a bunch of side jobs though. I totally forgot I could go to places to get work when not in the middle of a story mission.

You didn't. I thought that as well but it seems that they took that option away as whenever you go to them for work they just say they have nothing for you.

There really aren't any side missions. You can sell/compact cars for a little bit of extra money. I completed the game in roughly 10 hours. Not bad but not much re-playability or extra stuff to do once you've completed the story missions.

I started playing GTAIV last night. I might buy this in a couple of years.

I just finished it right now. Here's my short review.

Overall, the game is really great as a cinematic experience. Everything I loved about Mafia 1's presentation was pretty much in Mafia 2 except a few things. At certain points, the story really got to me. The unexpected parts really gripe you with emotion when they happen. I felt like I was interactive with a well-written mobster story. To be honest, I haven't felt this so immersed in a game since Half-life Episode 2. The 50's atmosphere just really pulled me in. This is probably the first game that made me feel like I was part of a black and white 50's mobster movie.

My complaints I think are going to mostly stem from the fact that I can't help to compare it to Mafia 1. First off, I do think Mafia 1 is superior for these reasons. The game I felt was too short for 11 hours playing time. I didn't want it to end so soon. There were some things I was still missing mission-wise like more shootings and car chases. Other than that, I really don't mind so much that the game didn't include freeroam. Though maybe more content will be added with DLCs in the future.

Technically though I did experience a few bugs and the AI would mess up now and then. But not enough to take me out of the gameplay completely.

I would give it an 8/10 mostly cause I wish it didn't end so soon.

I actually loved the cliffhanger ending. It was one of those shocking thought-provoking moments for me when the credits came up.

Then I heard a lot of people didn't like the jail part of the story. I was actually pleasantly surprised by it and felt it enforced the story pretty well. I think I liked how it reminded me of the movie Brute Force.

I thought the Jail part was excellent. I didn't know how long I was going to be there or what was going to happen or how I would get out. Brilliant.
Also, one loose end that left me a little uncertain is when you rescue Balls and Beans from the slaughterhouse and the guy with glasses seemed surprised that the guy survived. Was he the informer? It was never resolved.

This is everything that is wrong with game reviews.

People hate on reviewers because they don't think "Super Awesome Game Forever" targeted to mature audiences is as good as "Super Awesome Gaem Forever" targeted to younger audiences. Just because you don't like it, i.e. the game was not made for you specifically, doesn't mean it's not good. Same for movies and anything else that is reviewed. These people are paid to be objective. If they reviewed things based on whether or not it fit their personal tastes, game reviews would be much more like the user scores on Metacritic where people give top knotch games 0 because "it didn't run well on my system" or "I didn't like the way the guns sounded" or "too hard."

I mean hell, would you want to head over to IGN and see that the review for your latest favorite game just said "This shit's too hard, gave up about 45 minutes in... waste of $50 - 0/10"

Granted some reviews are stupid and miss the point of games and movies, but good reviewers will be objective and make relevant points as to what is good and bad about a particular game.

The only reason it isnt doing well in reviews (I personally consider anything below an 8 to be a game I wont even consider looking at), is because people are just comparing it to GTA.

As a linear experience, a great linear experience, I cant wait to play it.

The whole ''the huge world has nothing in it'' put me off carrying on playing Red Dead Redemption, so maybe it will spoil Mafia 2 for me, but if the missions and gunplay is as good as everyone is saying, I should enjoy this one.

this.

i cant say i really care enough about mafia 2 (i may rent it down the line) but some of these criticisms may be fair and allow for that rating. Plus is it actually fair to compare those 2 game reviews when they aren't done by the same reviewer?

They're judged on a very different scale.

IGN reviews depend upon the reviewer. Each member of the IGN team has differing perspectives of the genre they review, so it's individuals' reviews rather than ''IGN''s reviews. And they mix it up alot with someone who usually does strategy games reviewing an FPS. Its inconsistent, which can be good I guess, but ultimately leads to moments of 'wtf' when comparing reviews of big games to ***tty Wii games for example.

Meh, I was trolling with the pic :D Can anyone who's played it clarify the stuff in my spoiler?

I was planning on buying it then read all the shitty reviews. Then I read yours and now I'm thinking I'm gonna go out and get it after work. If I do and it sucks I'm gonna come to you for my $60.

EG gave it a 4/10. Lol'd.
Oh dear.

I fell in love with this game the minute I heard Let It Snow play as you walk to your apartment and Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli's Belleville playing in Guiseppe's shop.

I havent beaten the game yet (11 hours in, but I think I'm nearing the end), though as far as I know

Nothing really came of it. I know exactly which part you're talking about because I was like "oh shit, ****er is a traitor!" Then afterwards everything went on as if they did finish the guy off and that was that. I guess it was just a weird way of saying "I thought you guys were goners" that made him seem shady when he really wasn't. Though I don't remember seeing either of those two characters after that.

@ No Limit, you won't regret it. The game is great, and far better than the reviews make it out to be.

He is mentioned later on but I won't spoil it, but it did add to my confusion given the earlier scene.

Oh and yeah, the game is brilliant. I seriously cannot understand all the bitching currently going on in the 2K forums. People say it's crap because of no side missions then use the original Mafia game as a yardstick even though the first game is guilty of exactly the same thing. Go figure.

I haven't played the first one so I guess that wont be an issue for me. **** it, I'll go get it.

I found a guy talking to himself saying "All your base are belong to us. They set us up the bomb." in the prison yard.

I hue'd then I hua'd.

No you go play the first one.

Bitch.

<3

You're Polish, so I'll let that post slide.

Played about 2 hours so far. Absolutely loving the enviroments. And yup, it is nothing like GTA (in a good way).

I fell in love with this game the minute I heard Let It Snow play as you walk to your apartment and Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli's Belleville playing in Guiseppe's shop.

It was the same for me. I never wanted to move past that bit.

God damnit. I was so ready to post my funny image I forgot to check :( .

Well, look at the bright side. It wasn't funny and Stemot carried that torch in your stead.

CUrrently struggling a bit through the first 3 chapters, I hear it gets alot better later. All this driving around is a bit dull.

But the firefights are SWEEEEET.
