I'm kind of ripping this off from Dawn of the Ancients, even though I've never played it.

Anyway,

Two teams, combine and rebels, two bases. Both bases are always generating basic troops that advanced towards each other (build the levels in such a way that some cool fire fights, AI taking cover etc can happen). On top of that you have a range of hero units that the people playing the game can control, Gorden , Breen, Dog, Alex. Each hero unit has a few different weapons and special powers, I dunno, maybe the scientist can build traps / sentry guns or some scientist shit. Bunch of nerds.

Blowing up the enemy's barracks slows down the production of their troops. The game is won when the enemy's fortress is destroyed.

This mod would use all the existing Half Life 2 models/guns/sounds etc, nothing would need to be created before a demo of the mod could be put out so I'd imagine it would be fairly quick to build.

Does this sound like a good idea for a mod?

It's like most RTS games have a custom map. More ideas:

You could upgrade your troops with gold. At first your troops would be melee (zombies), but after some time they could get range weapons.

For x amound of gold, you can also spawn überleet fighters, like a strider :p

... Indeed... :|

I like it. Doesn't need much work, but it will give quite a fun experience. All you need is a mapper and a coder :p

That's what I figured. I run a small website development company anyway, only three employees, but its given me a good understanding of how to scope projects. Think I'm going to go away and do up a scope and then come back and advertise for a coder/mapper. Even to start with it would be easy to adapt the deathmatch maps instead of creating new ones.

I think you should need a big map with on the two edges of the map you have the barracks. Doing this in a DM map will destroy the whole purpose.

The barracks can just be a random room with some sort of destroyable object in it, like a computer console or something. The mod needs to be created as a proof of concept before adding customised content to it.

If their are any programmers reading this looking to work on a mod then get in touch with me at [email protected], I'm going to start putting together a scope for this mod and would like some feedback from someone who has worked on previous Half Life 2 mods, I'm not looking for someone to program it yet but I have a few questions about how the engine works.

Sounds kick-ass
Metrocops-Non armoured resistance
Overwatch-Armoured rebels
Sniper-Crossbow...er
Strider-Dog
1337-Gordon

Also maybe super-weapons
Headcrab shelling-teleport

Sounds like you have your act together! Good luck with that!

It sounds like it would be pretty fun, if you apply your knowledge as you have been then you will ultimately succeed.

In terms of coding, it will be a bit tricky to get off the ground when working with AI in multiplayer but overall the concept is sound.
Because the source engine is rediculously easy to create maps in, I would also suggest employing someone to make a quick map to run tests in. This is especially because the layout of the deathmatch maps are not well suited for your purposes at all.

Anyway I wish you the best of luck, please feel free to email or PM me if you're ever in need.

The idea is like a Warcraft 3 map I once played called Someone's Castle Seige but simplified.

What I was thinking for the AI, just give the computer controlled soldiers a basic path to move along, if they see an enemy to engage (start shooting) at them from where they are while advancing, be cool if they could shout out some warnings etc to add a bit of life to them but they don't need to be stephen hawkings.

Ultimately the game will have to be won by them but they can't do it on their own, that's why they need the hero characters.

So coming back to the maps, I think you could give them a path on the deathmatch maps to go along, then the two factions would meet in the middle, the hero players could move around the rest of the map, take shortcuts or avoid the main fighting area entirely.

Anyway, I've started scoping it so once I have something I'll post it up for a critique.

YOu would have very limited units though as the Rebels don't have the equil to most Combine stuff. Maybe you could give the rebels the helicopter(V gunship) and make dogs(plural) the equils of striders.

Yeah, quite a few war3 maps/mini-games are like that, two teams of dumb ai units with player-controlled rpg-style heroes on each side.

It would be cool if (eventually) you could buy upgrades for yourself (ie guns, armour) as well as ai unit upgrades, with rewards you get from frags. Sounds like a cool idea to do in a fps context!

Ok, I've written the full scope for first alpha release of this mod now, I'm looking for a coder to give me a hand with the project and to help me lead the team. You can view the ad here on the moddb forums:

If you know anyone looking to join a mod as a coder then please pass that URL on to them.
