Dark Dark Dark -- Daydreaming

Liking the sounds on this. As always, the singer Nona has a lovely voice. But there are some nice little musical touches everywhere from the band.

This one will be on the new album coming in October. Usually I want time to stretch out more (because I don't have enough of it), but boy am I looking forward to this.

UNKLE is one of my most listened-to bands of the past few years. Their style changes a lot between albums. Psyence Fiction, War Stories and Where Did The Night Fall are my favourites.

This is one of those songs that I just loved the first time I heard it: "I'm A Rope" by Tommy Sparks. So catchy...

Sleigh Bells - 2/10

I think I listened to them for 5 seconds when they were on NPR or something, and shut it off. Then their upcoming show was promoted and highly praised by a local music blog, and I'd forgotten who they were and listened again. They get 2 pts because I can see why there might be some appeal and an addictive nature to it. But I can't believe they have a big enough following to sell out shows. Really they just sound like a slower, weaker version of Melt-Banana, and if you're gonna listen to this kind of stuff, you might as well go all out and listen to Melt-Banana. Besides, Melt-Banana's singer manages to be energetic and awesome without resorting to retarded dance moves like Sleigh Bells that pretty much get repeated on every single song they perform.

Sorry for this. Must spread the pain/nausea:

Blech. :x

[edit] Just watched some Melt-Banana videos and they do throw in some silly stage antics. It's been a while since I saw 'em. But Sleigh Bells' are still 10 times more retarded.

It's bizarre how musically isolated J-pop really is. The utter stagnation of japanese pop music, divorced from outside musical influences and stranded in the late 90s, would make an interesting thesis.

Anyway Africa Hitech

New releases on Warp, courtesy of Mark Pritchard (Global Communication, Harmonic 313) and vocalist Steve Spacek

Ragga, dancehall, grime, bass influenced, but with a variability and hybridity above any of these singular genres. 2 eps so far; I'm really looking forward to see what they'll come up with next.

Also Actress (runs Werk Discs, released Zomby's Where Were U In 92?)

From the new LP Spazsh - bizarre, hazy, glitchy, relentless detroit-tech influenced electronic music. I love it.

Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize

The DVD that is, not the song. It's absolutely amazing, musical perfection almost. It's pretty under-edited in terms of effects, unlike Arriving Somewhere which was a bit over-edited, but that's OK as the stage lighting is fantastic.

I don't know what more to say. Steven Wilson is a god? Yes, he is.

Hate you so much. The store I pre-ordered it through had the supplier push back the date on this three ****ing times due to "label issues." ;(

Currently receiving it in two damn weeks. Woo.

The Walkmen - Stranded

Song preview for new album coming in September. So many beautiful wonderful horns. Lovely song. Vocals are pretty much the same as always (which isn't really a complaint) - basically he sounds like Bob Dylan. I'll probably be seeing them in October, if I can get over the headaches that the opening band (japandroids) gives me.

Puddle of Mudd - Blurry

Two-hit-wonder?

God this song brings back memories from like 7 or 8 years ago in school. This playing on the bus going to Wales for a weekend's worth of fieldwork.

Its a bit of a shame, as I really REALLY like this song.

Funky punky dafty disco style, repeats itself a bit much but it's still lovely:

Similar to above, a bit harder hitting and breaky:

Again with the kick drums and the breaks and the disco, but it's Phonat! The whole album is super cool:

This one's a bit more tame, bassy, minimal, unf:

Finally got my hands on Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (DVD). Good shit. The second half (more like 2/3rds) is a bit weaker and less diverse than the setlist on Arriving Somewhere, but it's all performed brilliantly, striking a near-perfect balance between studio clarity and live energy. In any case, having the entirety of Blank Planet on there is worth the price of admission alone, and it's just as immaculate.

Also worth mentioning, it's almost as stunning visually as aurally, both in their stage setup/lighting and the way it's shot and edited. Had to take some shots to show it off (although it's much better in motion, of course).
