I hated Source Forts anyway. And neoforts just sounds nazi.

Well aren't you friendly.

Anyway, I think (I haven't played but from what you describe i'm saying this) you should put in a set amount of combine turrets, like the ones you manned in HL2. Then users can move them arround and actually build outposts based around them and such.

That would completely set their mod appart from SourceForts.
 
I have respect for Sourceforts; the developer achieved a great entertaining game with mastering gameplay mechanics.

The ideal rule-set is entirely player based, and it suprisingly works often.

I can't say much for other source games.

Dystopia, DOTD, Hostile Planet, and perhaps the Legend of Mana are really the only games attempting to expand beyond military shooters with 12 bland maps. Other projects are logical in perception, but you can boil down those: who has the passion and who does not. It's great to have an idea, but too few lose interest and yearn for a game based on egotistical developers.

As far as modifications go, I'd say the Natural Selection team deserves the most core-development credit. They show time and time again that they are the leaders of representation and leadership in mod design. NS:Source will likely become the fore-front leader of source modifications, especially barring their eventual "My Games List" addition of NS:Classic.

Dystopia I expect will be an instant classic, as will Hostile Planet if the formula comes together.

It's really too bad mods like the specialist are doomed to stay on HL1. The Specialist is another superior modification as far as development goes.
