Hey, I know this has been probably asked a thousand times before, and I know there used to be a sticky on this, but I was wondering what the recommended (not minimum) requirements for Half-Life 2 would be.
This is what I have:

ATi All-In-Wonder 9600 128 MB
Pentium 4 2.66GHz processor
1 GB Ram
DX9-Compatible card

Is that good to run at close-to-max graphics, or should I upgrade to 2 GB ram, or a 256 MB graphics card?

You should be able to run it fine on High graphics @ 1024x768. I wouldn't up the resolution any higher than that tho.
 
i disagree, with that setting, you will run around 20 fps, i think. i recommend 800x600 with high or medium or 1024x768 with medium settings or low
 
Valve have taken into account peoples hardware and will have adjusted the game acordingly.....the min spec is higher than original so its likely that with the year delay your system might not handle "excellent" setttings but should be up to the job of running it reasonably well....1024 will be a bit slow on higher graphics settings.

anyways, i think for the most part, unless theres bugginess or specific hardware issues with the games compatibility, the following requirments would be suitable for good performace...

intel/amd eq of 2.4 ghz and up

512 ram or more (ddr -rambus)

AGP- 9800-x800\nvidia equivilents...

should be fine on 1027x720 with most things maxxed. Shadows/ antistropic stuff may need to be lowered and or disabled.
 
Yeah, on CS:S I can't run antistropic or Reflect All....
When I throw a grenade, the game slows down drastically. What is the cause of that?
 
Pft, don't let these foo's disuade you, you'll be absolutely fine.

Will you get a steady 60frames? nope, no way. But it'll be entirely playable, so don't sweat bulletes if you can't upgrade.

Once again, for the record: 45+ fps is silky smooth, 15-45 is entirely playable. Whiners ;)
 
You'll be able to run it at 1024/high at about 55 fps with that comp.
 
That's a good Computer...just play around with the game when it comes out and find the best setting for your stuff..unless the game has an automatic settings feature.
 
What about me... I got a 2ghz XP 2400+, Radeon 9800 Pro 128, windows xp, 1024 DDR333........

I was aiming for 1024x768 no AF or AA max settings around 40fps

OK PEOPLE HERE'S THE DEAL...COMPUTERS OVER 2GHZ...STOP ASKING IF YOU CAN RUN HALF-LIFE 2 BECAUSE YES! YOU CAN RUN IT NO PROBLEM!

But...If you have a 1Ghz computer...all I can say is when the game comes out...play around with the options and find the best settings..here's a tip.......

3Ghz Computer = very high resolution with max settings..no problem..

2Ghz Computer = high resolution with some setting max..like details but medium setting for shadows, and maybe effects.

1Ghz Computer = 800X600 all medium settings...or lower depending on your video card...

I am assuming if you have a 3Ghz or 2Ghz computer you have a more than decent video card.

Also your ram is a big factor:

More than a Gig of ram..MAX settings should run fine (again depending on your video card)

768MB or 512MB...MAX settings should run well but you might have to go to a lower resolution.

256MB...I would recommend upgrading to at least 512MB as RAM is not that expensive. But if you can't..depending on your CPU and video card..you might have to run it at 800X600 to get the best performance.

Remember...when you get the game..experiment with it and try to equalize between performance and quality..also compare it with other games such as farcry or doom 3...if you have either of these games..try those settings on HL2 and see what happens.

I hope that cleared some stuff up. :thumbs:

your so full of shit its not even funny. if your stuck with the minimum requirements just tweak your machine. if you have windows xp, there is shit loads of things you can do to make it perform better.

ill be running hl2 with 256megs of ram, 2.2 ghz processor and a 64mb dx9 compatible graphic card.
resolution will be at 800x600 with max graphics wooo

Oh, you think your good...AMD Athlon XP+ 1600, 1 gig ram, and the Geforce3 TI 200 64mbs!! Oh yeah, HL2 ready. :naughty:

Nice, i would probably rather play on your computer than mine. ive gota gay ass dell that ive tweaked alot. its not even my comp, its my dads. he never uses it. i like your amd tho. I had a computer just like it back in the day, then i sold it .. i miss it so much.. the thing hauled ass.
 
well I just got my 9800 Pro today, so my arse should be covered :D
 
Don't get discouraged if you have to play on a lower resolution, sometimes it can even be better.

When I first got this rig, I thought "woot HL2 on 1024/maxed( No AA/AF) with 50fps!"
But after playing around with CSS and the video stress test, I've decided to tone it down to 800/600maxed( 4AF/2AA) and it looks IMO better then 1024(noAAAF). And the 17 extra fps doesn't hurt at all either:)
 
So...Would upgrading to 2 Gigs RAM help?
If not, I'll save the money and go with 800x600.

The question is always money...2 gigs seems to be alot of RAM...If you have 1 Gig of RAM that should be enough..but if you can spare the money...upgrading to 2 gigs wouldn't hurt..but I don't know if you will see much improvement if you upgraded to 2 gigs...you would see a huge difference if you had like a 3.4 GHz CPU but other than that...I can't see what it could accomplish.
 
Not to be an annoyance, but what about me?

2.8 GHz, Radeon 9200 (256 MB), and 1 Gig of RAM.
 
does any one know what the CSS bench mark results is recommended to play HL2?

You will be able to play it but I think your Specs are going to be little below recomended at least may feeling of recomended. Thats what it seems like but there has been no good Benchmarks done for HL2 to see what parts are key to play this game well.

Another 512 ram would help, but pretty much the same as the thread starter.

If you have a 2.6ghz processor or higher (intel, probably an AMD 3400+ or something), worry about RAM/Video Card.

If you're running anything under a Radeon 9800 Pro, you're going to be bottlenecked by your video card. If you've got a 9800 or nVidia's equivalent, don't worry about it.

Under 1gig is going to slow you down. 512mb ram is enough, but you'll get slower load times and a little more stuttering.

Unless you have a state of the art system, don't expect to be playing at above 1024x768 with everything on. Antialiasing is probably less effective than boosting the resolution (800x600 to 1024x768 for example), and might give you the same performance hit.

Anyway, we don't know until the game's out, right?

Sapphire ATi Radeon ULTIMATE 9600XT(its better then a normal 9800xt)

i only real problem i can see with that is the ram.
 
the only problems you will run into with 512 ram, is increased load times, and more of that initial jittery effect you get when first looking around in a level, and not as quick re-entry into windows from a game. but to some those aren't that big of a deal.
 
I do disagree on the "below 9800 ATI gracard". I run CS:S at 1280 with details max at 40fps with a ASUS 9600XT 128 MB (okay, oc'ed a little). The rest of the system is a P4 Prescott 2.8 (@3.1 Ghz) and 1 Gig of Dual Channel DDR400...

If HL2 is based on all the things that CS:S is then I will be fine. I got AA to 4x and AF off...

But: CS:S is perfect on my test system which I test for a mag at the moment. Too bad I can't keep it after the test. It's a DELL XPS, 3.6 Ghz P4 EE, 4 GB DDR533, ATI x800, SATA ... beautiful but much too expensive :(

Yes my 3GHz P4 with ATi Rage can run the game with no problems, thans for the info :)

I am not sure if we should be judging how good a CPU is just by looking the GHz, Just look at this http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=NTI0LDU= You can see the AMD64 3200+ roughly 2.2 GHz, out preforming the Intel 3.2 GHz in some areas like 3dmark 03. By the way 64bit CPUs compared to the normal 32bit CPUs are not that great of a improvement in 32bit based games. You wont see a difference till they start making 64bit games then there will be a big difference between the two.
 
my p4 1.7ghz, 786mb pc2100, 9800pro(256-bit, 128 mb) runs cs: ok, only a slight slowdown on dust when everyone stars throwing nades and firing warning shots in the covered area. 1024*768, most stuff medeum, and no AA/AF as i dont mind the bumpy edges and such.
