This is being posted here, rather than news for the simple fact that none of this quite adds up.

Firstly, we've got a tweet from IGN:

https://twitter.com/#!/IGN/status/196857191230226433
"Wake up and smell the ashes."

Secondly, we've got a tweet from a guy who produces stuff for GamerLive.tv:

https://twitter.com/#!/LightForceJedi/status/197046838719819776
"Yes we know, you crash @GamerLiveTV . We were just about to reveal a certain #Valve game. Looks like we are smelling the ashes. #HalfLife"

What does all of this mean?

Well, in isolation, "Wake up and smell the ashes" could simply mean the imminent reveal of the final Meet the short, Meet the Pyro.

But then "reveal a certain Valve game"? "smelling the ashes"? "#HalfLife"?!?!

Discuss.

Probably trolling. I refuse to bite anytime one of these lines is thrown out anymore.

This would be the biggest troll in history.

Well the second one seems like BS as it is tantalisingly easy to drop Half-Life tags on news sites now. They generate instant discussion no matter how pointless they are. Then again anything is possible.

I just dunno what to think these days, every logical bone in my body is telling me the series is dead for the foreseeable future. I came to terms with that.. I even came to like it.. I mean a game that doesn't exist can't destroy the franchise after all!

/v/ also noticed that the Steam support Twitter account told people to "Be sure to check out all the #Valve feeds: bit.ly/IOMbeD"

Seem irrelevant though.

My money is on Meet the Pyro and a new update to TF2 that involves a new Steam feature they'll be showing off. I reckon @GamerLiveTV are probably looking for attention.

I'm just sure wires got crossed, and its just Counterstrike stuff

After all, one would half expect Geoff Keighley making the announcement, given he is the unofficial spokesperson for Valve ever since Doug Lombardi fell of the Radar

Looks like GamerLiveTV is trying to get their 165 Facebook likes up to something higher!

Why would a small site like that reveal a HL game?

To add, nvidia also sent out crowbars with "for use in case of zombie or..." engraved to media outlets...

Let's just start adding things that have nothing to do with HL or Valve!

:p

I just saw a porn video with the girl (half)wearing a hl2 t-shirt? Coincidence??

Nope, that was just me. I got excited.

Here's a message from the demon of the pit to pass the minutes. Seems like a nice guy. Probably already been posted. Note the soul-crushing mocking laugh at 11:03.

Can someone tell me where these two images come from? Or rather, the posting of their original publication? Taken from main Valve site, incredibly old, I just can't remember the source of these two specific images.

Based on the wording "game reveal" it doesn't sound like a release of a short, because thats not what a short is. But in any case, I think its trolling such as reusing G-mans words "wake up and smell the ashes"

My real guess is that this is just Meet the Pyro. Not sure if he mentioned it here, but smash noted over on the SPUF that Burton told him the timing of the IGN tweet and the Valve tweet saying "keep an eye on our feed" were entirely coincidental. I'm guessing "Wake up and smell the ashes" is just IGN's social media intern saying good morning to the rest of Twitter.

If anything else it might just be the release of Steam/Orange Box on Linux since Valve has been making so much noise about that recently.

It is Tuesday which is the traditional news/press release day for the gaming industry but the idea that it's HL3 in the immediate pipeline is laughable at best. I will GLADLY eat those words if I'm wrong.

If I were Valve I'd wait for at least a week after the new Portal 2 DLC was out before announcing anything new, but that's just me.

I've learnt to completely disregard any kind of rumour about Half-Life 3. If I was well known and went on my twitter just to say hash-tag Half-Life then I too would cause a stir in the beehive. It's just IGN being dicks (when are they ever not) and Gamer Live TV doing the same. I'm convinced this is nothing, and it's likely nothing will be announced at E3 this year. Valve have a small private booth, there will be no rolling on the stage, no ricochet 2, no Half-Life 3 or any kind of game. I know what they'll be doing, they'll be showing off the frankly pointless 'big picture mode'.

The steamworks page even says this 'revolution' (pahahaha) will be televised.

Pics or it didn't happen.
Nah, it was shit. Gamestop Blowjob, look it up if you really want.

I think the linux theory is probably the best one. Meet the Pyro makes no sense given the quote, even by IGNs standards. Its not going to be HL3 or Episode 3 because they're not going to detract media/fan attention away from their current projects. We have had rumors (cant recall if it was confirmed) that they're working on a Linux version of Steam, and it makes perfect sense that they'd release it with their own ports.

This may be wishful thinking, but I also cant see it being a new IP. For one, it'd suck attention away from their current stuff like I said before, but it also seems like we should be getting very close to an actual announcement of HL3. There's been a lot of new games coming out from them, and with each one the "WHY ISNT IT HL3" screams get louder and louder. Valve isn't oblivious to this, and most companies would heed this and do whatever they can to satisfy these companies. What gives me pause in my hope is that Valve isn't a normal company, and all their games do well regardless of whether or not its hl3, so they're probably not feeling the pressure of it like most other studios would be.

Ricochet 2 is just a joke Gabe uses to refer to HL3 without directly saying the words.

Although tbh I would play Ricochet 2, the first one is a neat little game and a sequel has a lot of potential to make it more interesting.

I think there's a little bit more here, though I thoroughly understand the skepticism.

Wow, its been several hours since the Black Ops 2 reveal and I have been waiting just to see which Nutjob would type ALEXS GUNZ IN BALCK OPS OMG HL3 REVAELED LOL

Turns out that nutjob was just me:glenn:

I don't know that handgun design for both Alyx's gun and the one in the trailer is generic as all f*ck as far as near-future weaponry goes and I know exactly which gun in the trailer you're talking about because I thought the same thing, except for guns from several other sources.

Expanding on BO2 I look forward to playing the campaign because Treyarch are actually competent at creating an enjoyable campaign experience and they're trying new things out with the campaign structure.

The nutjob is myself, who thoroughly plans to play and enjoy Black Ops 2.

...more topically perhaps, I think this forthcoming press bit from Valve will not be relating to an existing project. Well, perhaps Half-Life related, but certainly not any other franchise.

I'd love a new IP. Something a bit risky, because they can certainly ****ing afford it.

As long as they realise Graphical Lagging can be resolved if you shift resources from the CPU to the GPU, they had a really bizzarre resource allocation system BO1
