So how does steam work?

I went to the steam page, I downloaded it once in the past... but I don't remember downloading hundreds of megabytes worth of information.

I only have the option to download steam with cache files for all games, or certain games, none of those games are any which I play. I only want steam for half-life 2, so why can't I download the steam version that has no game cache files included?

When I download a file, is it actually filling up super amounts of space on my drive like I suspect? Like I downloaded 100mb movie file on steam once, and it put 600 additional megabytes on my hard drive. I don't want that.

That's just the way Steam works. It reserves space in the cache. You can choose not to download certain games, so that might help.
