hey I was just wondering... I recived a copy of half life 2 for x-mas. when i ripped of the wraping paper I expected a portrait of Freeman, however I saw a pic of alyx and didnt know what it was till i looked a split second later at the title to discover it was HALF-LIFE 2 !!!! whoo ra! but it just hit me today, do i have a rare box cover? because I've never seen one with alyx on it...

No you don't, as far as i knew there were 3 differen't box covers, i think they were Gordon ( Of course ) , Alyx and G-Man. However i may be wrong in which case the elders can correct me

AFAIK, the three boxes (Gordon, Alyx, G-Man - see the 3 poster set on the Valve merchandise website) were available only in the US (in the standard apartment sized PC games boxes that many territories did away with years ago). Places like the UK, and presumeably other european countries like Ireland, only had Gordon available.

Of course, in a sense these old Sierra-style boxes are to become a rarity, because EA now publishes the game

Even more so, Sierra doesn't even exist anymore. Here in Sweden it was all Gordon so that seems about right. And only the DVD version as well.

Well, they haven't existed independent from Vivendi for an absolute age, but the brand still lives doesn't it? F.E.A.R. has a Sierra logo on it. Or have Vivendi finally done away with the brand like they've been moving towards doing for ages, since October?

The other two are collector's editions (the black box and the silver one). I have 6 licences. Before HL2 came out I won a Bronze steam edition with a HL2 wallpaper competition. This is also the one I have installed. And I have installed the special silver one to play Half-Life : Source.

In the Netherlands most people prefer the black collector’s edition. But it’s not available over here and neither are the gman and alyx editions. Luckily I have family living in the US. (back then I didn’t have a creditcard en I didn’t know how to use ebay and paypal)
