Don't get me wrong, I liked the game when I first got it, but after a while, certain things used to drive me up the wall:

1. Headcrab/Crowbar interface - I never wanted to use my expensive ammo on the headcrabs, so I did the only thing I could and got up close and personal with them. Typical maneuvre: have a headcrab attack and just miss me, and I turn back to it, bend down and hammer with all my might. Really tiresome after a while.

2. Endless crates - Now, I never liked the crates in Quake 2, but at least I knew I would never have to bash through EACH and EVERY ONE OF THEM to seek out the slightest bits of health or ammo contained therein. I'd use the odd tripmine or grenade to speed things up, but it still took ages!

3. Annoying weapons - I have to admit, some HL weapons were cool, but others were annoying. The cool: That weapon that fires short sharp beams of energy, I love the electrical "Star Wars" style effect; The annoying: The marine's machine gun, the "hornet" gun, the continuous beam weapon (too loud).

4. Annoying aliens - For every cool Vortigaunt (complete with lightning effect) there's a bloody Alien Grunt (irritating stomping noise, irritating "hornet gun" effect and excruciating hornet "crunch" sound when they hit - buut, at least they sound good when they die.

5. Obvious jumping (and later timing) puzzles - OK, not so obvious at first, with that bit with all the suspended crates just prior to "Office Complex", but I mean later on at the Lambda reactor. Oh, and don't get me started on Xen!

6. Xen - Pretty to look at, but an absolute BITCH to negotiate! Enough said.

Any of you concur?

threads about what gets on my nerves about hl1...

jk

practically the same stuff

well thankfully they made hl2 and got rid of ur jumping through xen puzzles and replaced thme with physics problems, they also gave u a label on the boxes u need to hit, so u dont need to waste all that precious time u have on ur hands while ur playing ur videogames. they also got rid of all the unique guns, and added the gravity gun. the headcrabs are still the same, their not suppose to be a tough enemy, their suppose to be a hassle to deal with, though i think their not at all. so now in a few years when hl3 comes out, u can complain about all the things u hate in HL2 like "i hate how there wasnt enough boxes to waste my time and smash through in hl2 like i LOVED in HL, i wish they had all those cool and very loud guns like they did in HL, o and lets not forget, i wish all those raelly awesome xen levels were back in hl2, like they were in hl"

The scientists and security guys were in lack of model variation.

For some reason I like how it has places that feel awkward and the lack of model variation didn't bother me.

i suppose the headcrab/crowbar thing is a little bit of a pain, and the alien grunts and their stupid bee guns are kind of lame. but other than those very minor setbacks, i think it's perfect how it is.

You have to kill soldiers.

I always thought that was an awkward moral dilemma. They were just as in the dark as you were and were obeying government orders. I wonder if the resistance in HL2 was aware of all that happened. He was, after all, slaughtering his own fellow humans by the hundreds.

It makes me all the more curious as to how everything will tie together in the end.

Basically the entire game kicked ass as far as I'm concerned.

The only thing that got on my nerves with HL1 that I can think of right now is the Rocket Launcher rockets. If you were to move after your rocket is shot, the rocket would vear of target for some reason. Move right, the rocket will move right; duck down, and the rocket will do the same. It's painful to have to restrict your movement in order to blow up a tank or attack helicopter. It's especially frustrating when your health is low.

Took me a long time to get used to it.

Switch to a new weapon.

This is because of the tracking laser, you can turn it off with the secondary fire.:dozey: It does the same thing in two although you can't turn it off anymore.

lol, I think he was joking...or was he?

I thought EVERYONE knew about the tracking laser. I love the tracking laser, it's certainly not an annoyance, use it to your advantage. I used to practice getting the rocket to come back to my feet and blowing me up....hardcore!

I disagree with you on each and every one of those. What's with the sudden HL1 threads croping up?

The chapters:
On A Rail
Aprehension
Residue Processing
Xen
Interloper

Felt severly under-par with the high moments in HL1. The first three are severely dull and lengthy. The Last two are ugly, with no defining moments or even architecture. All include irritating pixel perfect jumping situations, some far too much of them. I'm pretty sure that baring one or two interesting moments in "Aprehension" (Icthysaur appearance/battle and Black Ops Ninjas), these chapters contained no stand-out moments whatsoever. When weighing HL1 against HL2, I find there are things in HL1 that reach a higher level than anything in HL2... but there are just as many that reach a far, far lower level than the uniformly good HL2 achieves.
