Jump the fence, go round to the right and then into a small alleyway, with a dead end. You will find the solution in that alleyway. Just don't spend too much time gazing at the clouds.
If I was Google, I would stick with the current invite system. As it stands it is only being used by people who want an email account, rather than spammers and bots signing up for hotmail accounts.

Having used both, VBulletin is more stable, offer slightly more features, and most importantly backs up much better then phpBB. That said it should do as it is proprietary software rather than released under a GNU as phpBB is.
