Australia's Conroy reveals plans to censor the Internet

Kids'll just turn to drugs to pass the time, now!

A kangaroo ate my firewall!

WOW lot's of Australia hate here.

The vast majority of people here would be against any sort of censorship. The last government released a free program for 'parents' that would do the same thing but only around 1000 people took them up on it. Now the new government has decided that because no one wanted this crap last time now everyone get it whether they want it or not.

I'm really hopeing people make noise on this issue cause I'm yet to find anyone here that thinks it's a good idea.

I only hate these types of news stories I hear coming out of Australia.

I rather like Australians themselves. They possess one of my most favorite accents in the world! Plus we have Aussies like Danimal who are ****ing awesome!

I just don't understand why the citizens are allowing this type of bullshit censorship. It's gotten to the point that Australia is practically synonymous with "censorship" when mentioned on the internet.

Holy shit, am I flattered all of a sudden.

Also, isn't this just a deviation from the whole Net Neutrality business?

EDIT:

I also lol everytime I turn on the radio and I hear shit like "Now I'm in Miami, bitch!" or "DAYUMN HOOS A SEXY BITCH"

Yeah I figured that. I was saying that the only people who want this are family groups, not many citizens do. The reason there isn't a larger outcry is because this hasn't received any media coverage.

I find this thread utterly hilarious but not as hilarious as Conroy.

We do not have a bill of rights. - Huge issue imo.

To put this in perspective for you yanks. Both leading parties Labor and Liberal wanted some form of filtering it simply wasn't feasible when the Libs were in power. It was bound to happen and the only way to stop it is with the help of the greens/democrats and people like Nick Xenophon. The blacklist as it stand only blocks illegal material the OP is rather wrong. Anything else like blocking say sexual content is purely optional at this stage. However there are still issues. The filter itself doesn't do what's it's meant to do either. The report clearly states it only filters HTTP and cannot stop P2P. Meanwhile the report also goes on to say any competent computer user can get around the filter.

http://whirlpool.net.au/img/article/1852/isp_filtering_live_pilot_report_low_res.pdf

Have a read. It's rather hilarious. They mentions percentages without giving sample sizes, like err wtf?

"The report into the pilot trial of ISP-level filtering demonstrates that blocking RC-rated material can be done with 100% accuracy and negligible impact on internet speed", said Conroy.

The report itself contradicts this statement. Also a negligible impact in speed is apparently anything up to 20%

The report also found that the filters "over-blocked" up to 3.4% of sites that were not intended to be filtered, and that high volume sites would likely cause the filters to fail.

More like 103.4% eh Conroy? The technologies they are testing are broken.

Now even if you excuse the broken filtering we aren't allowed to see what's on the blacklist not even with a FOI request. What's to stop them adding legislation in 3 years to block obscene content they don't like?

/edit

IF YOU OPPOSE THE FILTER YOU ARE A PAEDOPHILE.

^ This is the attitude of pretty much everyone who supports filtering. You will be labelled a paedophile and they will rip you to pieces publicly. Politicians and ISPs who are against the filter have to be very careful.

I would also like to point out that it is all old news, all the ISPs are opposed to the idea and it hasn't yet displayed as a Bill in either of the two houses.

Why the **** did the country vote in Labor? All they seem to do is piss good things up against a wall. Ask any Aussie what the Labor Govt. has done with its term in office and the only thing they'll say is that they gave us $900 with no real outcome to the Economy.

Edit: I found this to hit the nail on the head:

Australian radio presenter and writer Helen Razer dislikes the filter because she enjoys pornography, does not believe it causes harm to adults, and doesn't think that children are at much risk:

"I enjoy pornography. Perhaps not quite so much as I enjoy living among citizens who take an entitlement to free speech for granted. But I do like it quite a lot. And it seems that my porn is endangered. If Conroy's clean feed works, which some tech sceptics argue that it cannot, it will prevent access to all pornography ... I can report that one doesn't simply amble into X-rated or even R18+ material ... I have become adept at this; children, presumably, have not. And if they have, clearly they are the issue of the world's most reprehensible parents and should be sent to live with Hetty Johnston forthwith ... Despite the best efforts of some, there is no evidence that pornography will negatively affect me or other consenting adults ... The only lasting effect of my access to porn is a reflex giggle when the pizza delivery man knocks on my door."

Oh shit, I forgot you were an Aussie too Sloth.

<3

If our ****ed up senate actually votes this bullshit crap in i am seriosuly going to get the **** out.

Now i'm becoming a little less anti-firearms. I don't think American politicians would try and pull this kind of shit on their citizens.

/very goddamn pissed off.

Holy crap!

Senator Conroy thinks he can sneak his plan to censor the internet in as Australia settles in for Christmas

The House of Representatives will next sit on Tuesday, 2 February 2010.

I hate it when political activists cannot understand Government, Conroy cannot get a Bill passed till the HoR sits again in February and even then it will be after a lengthy review period. That and Labor do not hold a Senate Majority, thus getting any bills need the support of the Greens, Nick Xenophon and Family First Senators.

I hate it when political activists cannot understand Government,.

Well they don't really have to understand government to have their say in the matter and quite frankly the more irrate pissed people we have the better.

True, but understanding the system better improves the possibility of being able to shift it.

If your going to talk about the censorship plan, give the full information. The OP has just mislead everyone into believing that the children censorship plan is for everyone including adults. ITS NOT.

Theres a different censorship for adults which blocks out illegal websites.

Also i would like to make it known that this censorship plan has nto come into affect and needs to pass the parliament which i doubt it will pass, another misleading thing from the OP. He makes out that the censorship plan is going ahead right now.

Edit: sigh at the amount of trolling in the thread. 90% of you don't actually know anything about the plan but you still comment on it like you do.

Warped can go suck my Kangaroos snag and rissoles.

Did you know they are going to block all Hungarian websites because "the whole country is made up of porn kings". Unbelievable!

God damn I had no idea we had so many Australians here. I know all of you and love all of you, but I can't for the life of me remember that you're Australian!

Source? "my friend told me" or "i read somewhere" isn't a good source.

Wtf first no R18+ classification for games and now this.. Sad times for Australia :(

You Australians are always welcome up here in Canada. It's a little colder, but our Internet is as free as can be!

The list of blocked websites can be found on Wikileaks. Check it out... before they block that too.

Also, I wouldn't go to those websites unless you know they are okay, because a lot of them are illegal. Some of them are harmless as can be.

And a lot of the blame can fall on software vendors. Why can't they make it more prominent/obvious/easy to .. require a password to use the internet, or to use it more fully; and easier for computer Newbie parents to set up this safeguard.

It wouldn't stop everyone, but while you are installing the OS, you should be given the option to filter the internet, or to require a password to use it at all. This would help somewhat. Or even better, it should be standard on all internet browsers that call on the OS's password to install. Smart or unsupervised kids could still reinstall the OS, but it would help if parents took (ie. secure in a safe) the OS install discs.

Our public libraries have a filtering system in place, I'd guess it helps somewhat. Obviously, these are public computers and you won't be permitted to use them to view porn or other questionable material even if you can, or wanted to.

However, I was blocked when accessing an audiophile forum at the library. So I'm thinking it's blocking keywords, like audiophile..

**** Censorship.

Wait a second... you guys don't have free internet!

Do you? :O

haha, I shouldn't make posts on the Internet so early in the morning. I did mean censorship free, but also we can easily get away with other things online that you could get in trouble for in the US. Such activities will be left unnamed.

Censorship is an extremely slippery slope. I would be extremely alarmed by this.

I would be up in arms.

That's going to cause so much shit if they ban /b/.

Yes. All is going according to plan.

Seems like Australia doesn't like cub porn. Jerks.

Anyway, I'm absolutely disgusted by this whole thing, it's horrible.
