Inspired by the thread on guitarists, who do you think has the best voice (or alternately, whose voice do you love)?

Personally, my vote goes to Jeff Buckley. Hearing him sing Lilac Wine is like nothing else.

Gunnar Orn Tynes and Orvar Poreyjarson Smarason from Mum. Their voices are just so mesmerizing.

David Bowie, he has more range and control over his voice then any other singer I've heard.

I also like Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain, David Gilmour, Bjork, Neko Case, Kim Gordon and Roger Waters..... among others.

Cedric Bixlar (At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta)
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd, namely on the Animals album)
Thierry Amar (A Silver Mt. Zion, but it's hard to tell who is the actual vocalist with those guys. Ker-raaay-zee)
Thomas Erak (The Fall of Troy)
Justin Broadrick (jesu, Godflesh)
Aaron Turner (ISIS)

A few that stand out. All very distinctive in sound, give them all a listen and you'll see.

I think the thing that most sets bands apart from each other is a unique vocal

eg robert plant, bon scott, thom yorke, david bowie, lennon/mccartney, kurt cobain, eric burdon, tom petty, bruce dickinson, jack black etc

i dont think the voices even need to be particularly good, just unique (eg bob dylan)

Ronnie James Dio is awesome. And he still sounds the same as he did 30 years ago

Either the girl in Freezepop, or Muddasheep.

Some great mentions in this thread, I'd go along with Thom Yorke for one. But as Crush said, unique voices are always the most memorable, so I'd include Matt from Muse in my candidates list for such a great range.

It depends. I hate people who sing "well", I like the ones who sing "honestly"...I really like gritty male vocals in mid range, though its hard to say who.

I would say eddie vedder but his voice is too...mumbly. I would say whoever is the lead singer for bush.

That would be Dick Cheney.

I lol'd though.

And... ugh, I feel like such a tool for saying this... but I really like Trent Reznor's voice. Also Thom Yorke and Emily Haines. All for different reasons.

Thought you were gonna say Maynard James Keenan, lol.

But yeah, he's pretty good and unique. For purely vocal stuff I prefer him in APC though, 3 Libras is pretty amazing.

Err... besides that, I'd have to say Bono.

LOL, jk. Tom Delonge.

My top 3 vocalist in no order:

Freddie Mercury
Roy Orbison
Annie Lennox

Their voices have such emotional power in my opinion.

the chick from cat power
the dude from my morning jacket
the chick from fiona apple...:P

hmm... there's a lot to be honest

Sara McLachlan... she sang in Delerium's - "The Silence"... Though only in the Oakenfold remix does the song truly do her justice.

Kirsty Hawkshaw... she sang "Just Be" by DJ T... i dunno... chick singers really do it 4 me ha ha...

I LOVE PROGRESSIVE!!!!! WOOOOO!!!

Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins I guess. I like how her lyrics are, for the most part, indecipherable.

Jack White, from the White Stripes.

Which reminds me, I really need to buy me some White Stripes albums.
