Part of New York's Times Square has been sealed off in a security alert involving a suspected car bomb.
Police say they removed bomb-making material, including propane tanks, explosive powders and an apparent timing device from a parked SUV.
Part of the popular tourist area in the centre of Manhattan has been cleared of pedestrians.
In a statement, President Barack Obama praised the quick response by the New York Police Department.
The security alert was triggered when a police patrolman saw smoke coming from a black Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street at about 1830 (2230 GMT) on Saturday.

My friends girlfriend is on a trip to NYC and she was in Times Square when this whole thing started. I think it was just a car fire though?

Thank goodness whoever made that are idiots.

Propane tanks though? that doesn't sound like it'd be very devastating except to people right near the vehicle within like 5 feet. Could have been something more powerfully explosive like ANFO.

glad no one got hurt but trust me, if you throw one of those small propane tanks into a raging fire, even 100 feet back you can feel the blast of heat.

That's what I was wondering. I laughed my ass off at them stuffing the trunk full of fireworks. But what do I know.

What the hell. They updated it and deleted 90% of the story. I guess there are some factual problems. You can tell the story was rushed and breaking news when you find several typos.

That doesn't mean they did it though. If they find evidence of it, I'll believe it, but from the sound of it, it seems like they heard something terrorist sounding happened in the states, they wanted to claim responsibility so that we'd believe Islamic radicals can still grip our cities in fear.

I understand. That last part is interesting and I hadn't considered it.
 
Terrorists need to hire some professionals, like those ones in Iraq and Pakistan who make those car bombs that kill 30 or 40 people.
 
The suspect is described as a white male in his 40's. Its possible that he could be an jihadist terrorist or he could just be some crazy ticked off guy like the one who flew his plane into the IRS building in austin.

Bomb =/= islamic terrorist.
 
Yeah that sounds reasonable. Sounds like some idiot who just put all the random explosive crap he could find in a car and tried to set it on fire.
 
If the suspect is indeed white, then it confirms the stereotype that white people can't make car bombs for shit.
