A prototype unmanned combat aircraft of the future, Taranis, has been unveiled by the MOD for the first time today.

Named after the Celtic god of thunder, the concept demonstrator will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous, stealth Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would ultimately be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent.

Should such systems enter into service, they will at all times be under the control of highly trained military crews on the ground.

Yes until the system gets a virus and skynet is initialized to "solve" the problem.

As far as aesthetics go, the red triangle-ish thing in the center looks very strange. It seems like it could've been much sleeker, but oh well, as long as it gets the job done.

Also, what hangar is that, and why is it so spiky? For sound or something?

They probably are... Looks like just a bunch of palletes with sound foam on them.

they're stupid for not spraying the pallets black! looks cheesy and I don't even notice the monstrously large UAV right near them
 
It has to be kept in a sound proof room. If it hears people talking it will immediately kill them.
 
Have the Ministry of Defence hired Sonic Team to design their aircraft hangars or something?
 
So after telling everybody UFO-like objects were being test-flown around the place, which made everyone all "jou crazy fool" about it. I go this thread. And I see this UFO-like prototype craft.

it's a radar thing, to make sure that other radar signals don't come in, so that they can test its capabilities and functions.

The Brits are kind of new to this entire wasteful military spending thing, they still have a lot to learn. But A for effort.

Honestly I haven't, but I'm sure they are cute little projects that wasted a couple billion pounds. Once you guys have projects that take 30 years and go 30 billion over budget but you refuse to cancel it because so much money has already been flushed down the toilette let us know.

Much as I hate to quote Wikipedia:

british and almost all nato countryes has spend tons of money on military stuff
 
Apparently this thing is tiny, only 9 meter wing span. From the picture it looked massive.
