We are rejuvenating the “Rate and Discuss” threads, with the intent of generating discussion and debate, in regard to your recent watch, playthrough, or read. For the music forum, this could be the last gig you attended or the latest albums you have been listening to. As a prerequisite of posting in this thread, you must expand upon your rating with, at the very least, a brief paragraph as to why you delegated it said rating. You must discuss, analyse, and critique – “I liked it” is not sufficient, and any posts that do not meet this criteria will be deleted.

There can, of course, be discussion and argument - but in the same way that "I liked it" does not constitute a post, neither does - and it pains me to say this - "You're stupid, shut up" though some of you clearly are.

With the Disney movies, it takes me a while to work out whether I've seen them before in my childhood. I'm still none the wiser here, since I'm pretty sure I would have repressed memories of seeing this if I was a child... but then, as an adult there's a whole extra dimension of sinister to it. Some of it's probably not intentional (why does Gepetto want a real boy in his house anyway, huh?) but some of it must be (the coachman who takes young boys to pleasure island, and they 'don't come back as boys'?!), and it's just generally as far from a stereotype of Disney as simple, tedious good versus evil as you're likely to find.

Motorcycle Diaries - 8/10
Rewatched Motorcycle Diaries after watching Soderbergh's Che: Part 1. The movie is about Ernesto 'Che' Guevara trekking through South America with his best friend before he came a revolutionist; its based on his diary/memoirs that was written at the time. The acting was superb throughout, especially from Gael García. The film starts off with a light undertone and turns into a movie about self discovery and how they turned into revolutionists. Gustavo Santaolalla (also composed 21 grams and Amores Perros) did an amazing job with the soundtrack, well deserved oscar for Jorge Drexler for his song "Al Otro Lado del Río".

I liked it :)

probably Pixar's best film (not necessarily the most entertaining). Pixar really went for emotional depth in this one and for the most part it works brilliantly. the plot, while good (they sorta lifted the idea from Porky pig's trip to "darkest" africa to find the last dodo bird) took a back seat to the characterization in the film. Carl is by far Pixar's most fleshed out character and the supporting cast is just as nuanced, particuarily the dogs (SQUIRREL!!!). the 3d tech was awesome and not as gimicky as I had expected. definately looking forward to more 3d films. Pixar, why the hell havent you made Incredibles 2 yet? I2 in 3d would be incredible
 
Sunshine - 7/10

The movie wasn't one of the best out there, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying it. I liked the whole premise, no matter how silly and unreal it is, and how it panned out wasn't so bad.

I thought some of the ways that people died were a little...cliche. The captain going out to fix the shield and just letting himself get killed. No real attempt at running, just accepting that it's going to happen anyway. I don't know, if I was about to die, I'd be running like a little bitch. Also, what the hell is up with the other captain. That part just made me facepalm.
 
Some of those idiosyncrasies are actually why Sunshine has stuck in my mind, and I can still enjoy watching it. It's a movie with a lot of detail, so I found seeing it multiple times and trying to looks for answers to some of the stranger stuff in the film to be pretty rewarding. Knowing how it all ends makes for some interesting subtext in earlier scenes.
 
I really should watch it again...see if I can find any little hidden parts I missed.

The whole tower flash roasting the plants was actually something I didn't expect. When the fire went through, I initially was confused. But then it clicked and they showed why it happened. Was pretty neat how they did that.
 
Further to Harryz's Argentine kicks, everybody should see Che, both parts one and two. If you hate Che Guevara, buy the box set; if you love him, perhaps you should pirate it.

Isn't it made pretty clear that, as much as his crewmates pester him over the intercom, he just isn't going to have enough time to make it back behind the shield?
 
Sunshine is easily my most favorite science fiction film of the past decade.
The stuff with Pinbacker (the Icarus 1 captain) is fully ridiculous and the only reason this film doesn't get a 10/10 from me. I give it a 8/10 fyi. Other than that, though, the movie is amazing. Very subtle, you have to watch it a bunch of times to fully understand everything, and overall it's a very thrilling, intense movie (I know your pulse was in your throat when they went on the old ship and the dead crew would flash on the screen). Some of the deaths are a little overboard I agree but their incredible intensity makes it less campy than I would think it otherwise. Also mother****ers jump through space with no suit on in that movie. The ending is my favorite part (after Pinbacker is out of the equation). It's beautiful - the new star is born, and its creator and the sole savior of humanity has a chance to reach out and touch the surface of the sun before he is consumed. Generally speaking I'm also a big fan of the movie's visual aesthetic and general atmosphere. Alex Garland + Danny Boyle = epic win.

Knowing - 6/10
The newest Nicholas Cage movie. Somewhat disappointed in Proyas. There were some aspects of this movie I absolutely loved (namely, the aliens) but be careful not to read into the theological aspect of it too much. Awesome disaster sequences, horrible writing, absurd plot, a lot of depressed / intense Nick Cage action. It managed to be a bit spooky but the ending, while cool, really felt like it was missing something vital and I want to stab Ebert for raving about this movie and giving it four stars.

Hahaha well said. I still haven't seen Che, but I love reading about him (though he's no idol of mine, just a very interesting man) and it'd be nice for a more deep biographical movie about him since the Motorcycle Diaries was only the early period and took significant liberties with the real story of his life.
 
Yep, one and the same. He also made I, Robot. Dark City is his best movie by a significant margin though IMO, and I'm not even terribly crazy about that movie.

Che may not be what you're looking for (though I'd recommend you watch both parts anyway). I don't know whether I've said this on these forums before but...it's weird, not conventionally biographical.

It's not interested in the interior mind of its protagonist. In Film 1 action sequences are constantly broken by black-and-white sequences of fake archival footage. But half of that is just faithfully reproduced public addresses Che gave in the UN - public statements. The rest comprises an interview with a journalist, which you might expect to get inside his mind. But when she asks things like "how did you feel?" or "did it make you jealous when...?" he bats her away and repeats the official line.

It's not interested in the content of his ideology either - the film's not an argument for socialism like I Am Cuba (even though there are huge cinematographical similarities). Instead, it seems to be interested only in process - the second film particularly is filled with gruelling, ages-long takes of manual labour, jungle marches and military tactics. It's powerfully antidramatic, and the best way to describe it is procedural. If it's about Che Guavara, it's strictly about what he did, and not who he was - not even in the existential sense, since it skips over enormous portions of his life, notably those in which critics claim he committed his worst crimes. That's because the film's only interested in Che as soldier. It's Guerilla Warfare: The Movie.

I'd have enjoyed I Robot more if it didn't basically rape Asimov's ****ing corpse.

Dark City is pretty fantastic, though.
 
I have still yet to see Che: Part 2 (probably watch it tonight), but the battle of Santa Clara in the last act of part 1 one was amazing. And how Del Toro didn't even get nominated for best actor nomination is beyond me.

Nicholas Cage fire your ****ing agent you idiot. I was never a big fan but enjoyed him in Raising and Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas.
 
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: 9.5/10

Michael Bay has outdone himself in this movie, wow!

The best line two lines ever heard: "I stand, you fall" at the end of the movie, when Optimus teared the face off of the Fallen, I loved when Optimus made his last stand in the forest scene "I will take you all on!" (with the epic Steve Jablonsky score)

I almost cried in some parts, was trembling in others and chills were sent down my spine during some of the scores. All signs of a great movie. I can't wait for Unicron in Transformers 3.

sweeney todd 8/10

I hate musicals and this is the only exception :)

Great story and characters, pretty good music and it does have a nice design aesthetic to it IMO (oh and there's blood everywhere O_O). Depp is great in it (even if burton does use him too much) and so is Alan Rickman :D Helena Bonham Carter is good although honestly I found her to be the weakest singer.

Even if you hate musicals I would still give this a shot (like I said I personally hate musicals).

like 3 out of ten

THIS FILM IS BAD

IF IT HAD COST ME ANY MORE MONEY TO SEE I WOULD BE MAD

I saw the first one drunk and buzzing from an after-ball the night before on 3 hours of sleep on a concrete floor and WHAT CAN I SAY I enjoyed it

In keeping with tradition I had about ten drinks (mainly liquor) before watching this one but GOD DAMN IT this movie was so not good. The people who watched this movie and were like 'yes this is good put it in some cinemas for people to watch' are fucking retarded

So many times I actually had to look away from the film because it was just utterly cringe-worthy and so so so lame

BUT LOOK HERE'S THE THING some of the action scenes were... Impressive. It got samey in the second hour, but there's a certain ultra-over-the-top kinetic beauty to some of the shots however the film was mainly 'LOOK GUYS BRING THE RAIN WE NEED TO DO A TASK' and then the music would go BUM BUM BUM DUHDUHDUHDUH BRAAAAAAM and there would be a minute of Michael Bay jerking off over how fucking incredibly great America is and LOOK AT THIS AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN IT'S MAJESTIC BEAUTY AND OH NO SOME BAD ROBOTS

So many plot-holes, so many completely retarded moments, so much cringe-worthy faux-drama

As it tends to do my mind wandered and I imagined a better film, one that was one and a half hours long and which consisted entirely of slow-motion excellence, with an orchestral/ambient soundtrack where robots the size of cities grapple with one another and a wall of square bass modulates in and out of audible frequencies, as an orchestral theme swells and is more and more rapidly gated until it becomes a mesmerising blur of noise and the screen warps into four dimensions and we see through space and time and we understand the true nature of what Michael Bay is trying to do here

He's an artist, he's a genius,

he's the fucking renaissance. This isn't film - it's a comment on film. A subtle and fantastic monologue, both mocking and celebrating human endeavour but ultimately crushing it all with the sheer force of it's superlative perfection

This film is shackled by what the studios want but Michael Bay's vision is glorious and perfect, where cosmic entities fling whole supernovae at one another and the audience softly levitates from their chairs from the pure force of the rippling pulses of sound and brilliance and magnificence, immolated in the stream of the here and now, a glowing incandescence of pure light and energy, the searing score pulling ermine soaked in honey through our ears, softly caressing our brains in a scintillating explosion of endorphins and dopamine as the film reaches the crescendo it has been building to and bursts, amber coloured and beautiful, into the collective consciousness of every being in the known universe, which promptly folds in upon itself, compacting all energy and pouring it out through the movie screen in front of which we sit, transfixed, no longer human but beings of pure energy and magnificence, complete, perfect, whole, omniscient and omnipresent and omnipotent

Look this is hyperbole I guess but it gets a TEN OUT OF TEN FROM ME GOLD STAR GOOD WORK GUYS

I think that film would be worth at least fifteen dollars, maybe twenty with 3D glasses

Ah, these 'Rate and Discuss' threads are self-contained - that's the point of them! Enclosed discussion. It would be... totalitarian of me to apply them ubiquitously.

I was going to write a review on the movie Death Sentence but if I write too much people see the movie and it gets ruined, or it ruins the fun of surprise. simple reviews are the best and a lot of times I rent movies from Netflix without even knowing the plot, or what type of movie it is and it turns out to be amazing!! reviews fuking suck most of the time and generally reveal too much or spoil too much for others.

In-depth reviews are so much better, it generates discussion. The last thread where it was just people rating movies with no discussion, it got boring to a point where I stopped posting in that particular thread. Great job on rejuvenating the 'Rate and Discuss' threads.
 
Resident Evil Degeneration

6.5/10

First off, as a zombie fanatic, I have to give it an automatic 5/10 at the least since it does contain my lovable slouching moaning crawling hideous monstrous undead. The rest 1.5 is given for the well captured and somewhat believably realistic CG.

Otherwise, the movie had horrible story line, horrible voice actors (notably the kid), terribly written scripts, absolutely delusional mad man's logic, and absolutely non canon as a somewhat decent idea (the pharmacy's cure, drugs, etc) is utterly and unquestionably destroyed before the film ends.
 
The Aviator 8/10
Pretty good all around. Acting was a bit over the top but alright in general. Very interesting guy that I've never really took much interest in, despite always wondering what he is all about.

Dawn of the Dead 8.5/10

Pretty great all the way through. Maybe that's not descriptive enough.
 
Wall-E - 8/10

It was kinda weird seeing robots with such human qualities (love), but it was a fun movie. Humour through out, action, cool story, good movie to watch with anyone.

Resident Evil: Degeneration - 6/10

It only gets 6 because fight scenes were animated beautifully, but the story and some of the dialogue was god awful. (cheese alert)

Eagle Eye - 9/10

This movie I really liked, reminded me of Glados ALOT, Billy Bob isn't drunk so it loses 1 point. Good action.
 
Public Enemies

I had high hopes from this since I usually like the director and the leading actors. Overall, though, I thought it just had a few good moments. Acting was good, it just didn't seem to accentuate on what I wanted it to. I wanted more time spent on the actual bank robberies and on Dillinger's popularity, but it just didn't provide a real great sense of those.

The thing that really, really bothered me was toward the end. Maybe I missed something but it seemed like there was an enormous plot hole.

(mild spoilers of scenes near the end)
Dillinger's girl is in jail, and he clearly wants to get her out. Then out of mother****ing NOWHERE the police are blackmailing this lady who I thought was part of the police force in some way into giving Dillinger's whereabouts. Then it shows that he's hanging out with that lady and some other chick who he takes to the movie... why the **** was he hanging out with them?! WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?! HOW DID THEY EVEN MEET?! WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON?! Did he just forget about his girlfriend in jail?!

I know how it actually happened, but it really seemed like an important scene was just plain GONE and completely buggered up the end. Which is anticlimactic to begin with...
 
I saw Public Enemies as well but since I was exhausted before the movie even started all i saw were shootings and lots of shouting. it was good but I think I'll need a second play through to even make a good review. overall it looked like a good performance by at least Depp and Bale

This is a tough movie to rate, since it's barely a film in some ways, and in others it deserves more praise than I can give it. It's animated, because no footage exists for the stories being told, and most of the people telling their stories are the men who were present. It's slow and intriguing most of the time, and has some fantastic use of music and art. But it is at it's core an absolutely gut-wrenching film, and one you need to want to understand and see through. If you're looking for war-movie entertainment, this isn't it, but it's an important and startling film nonetheless.
 
Knowing - 6/10...
I expected it to just be a disaster movie where everything dies and for the most part I got it, but they just had to throw in some even stupider shit.
Forgettable characters that I didn't really care about, annoying children, and ****ing aliens/angels/whateverthe****s.
The premise was cool enough, however uninspired or original it was and the CGI was great.

Nicholas Cage was also unintentionally hilarious in several points of the film too. :LOL:
My favorite scene being when the plane crashes and a guy comes running out of it while on fire and Cage just points at him and yells "WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?!" to which the guy is far too busy burning alive to give any response.
 
Yeah. I would have given Knowing a 5/10 but Rose Byrne bumped it up another point. That was one of the most painfully stereotypical Nick Cage movies I've ever seen though, he's got the depth of a wooden board. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually a big fan of Cage, but when he gets written as a character whose two facets are despair and depression it's pretty hilarious.
 
Role Models 8/10 - I'm not usually into the comedy movies that come out, but this one was pretty goddamn awesome. The LARPing in particular had me in stitches. Casting was kind of hit and miss, though.
