Cloudkicker = awesome.

Looks like me and Badhat can agree on something.

Trent Reznor + Atticus Ross - Pieces Form the Whole

This is from the Social Network soundtrack, which happens to be AMAZING. This might be my favorite thing Trent has done since With Teeth.

I'm sure you meant The Fragile :p

That soundtrack is indeed amazing. I got the six-track sampler before the movie came out and listened to it on the bus for like a week. I should track down the full soundtrack.

been listening to the Word Alive, they've changed singers and its for the better.

got their other songs, but this cd is their best work so far

I listened a lot to the Word Alive and We Came as Romans before the summer, great stuff. Have you tried Bury Tomorrow or Confide?

Anyway, here is something not completely different:

Been fixing my music library and "rediscovered" them.

^ Horrible video quality, but the song sounds nice. Will have to check them out.

Daft Punk - Tron Legacy soundtrack

I am not quite sure what I should think of it. Maybe I had expected a bit more Daft Punk and less Hollywood. The hints of Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack only seemed to remind me of the fact that the old Greek did a score that was a lot bolder than what the French boys have produced. There are some stand-out tracks. Adagio for TRON and the End Titles are beautiful marriages between classical orchestra and electronics. Derezzed proves that Daft Punk can still make great (if short in this case) techno tunes. But there isn't one track that I would pick a single, no anthem to represent the soundtrack. As an original album though it is a lot better than Human After All so that is a plus.

Philip Glass - Itaipu & The Canyon

I never liked this before but for some reason it's really awesome right now.

Typical Philip Glass ultra-repetitive stuff. But it's got some cool vocal stuff going on. I still prefer the piano-based pieces a la Truman Show soundtrack, the Solo Piano album, etc. The Itaipu stuff leans more towards Koyaanisqatsi style.

Just Bought the new Tron Legacy OST by Daft Punk as well as the 4x4=12 album by Deadmau5. my techno and dub step are covered for the next few weeks/months :D

This starts out all 70s cop soundtrack then just goes in a completely different direction. These guys have way more range than I thought they would. So glad I found them from the Dilla sample (yes DJ Shadow sampled them too but that's not how I found them sooo).

I've been listing to soundboard recordings and early demos of some of the world's greatest bands. I would highly recommend seeking this stuff out if you can. Truly, the studio version sounds much better quite often; hell, some bands sound like shit live, let's face it. But occasionally, the whole feeling of the song is lost in the studio editing room. Maybe it's because you've heard it so many times before but it sounds so fabricated.

Anyway...

1974 or 1975

I just feel like: everything that was good about a band can sometimes be lost once they are a hit.

Case in point: allegedly, Eddie didn't even really like doing those insane guitar solos he became famous for; he was pressured into doing them. He liked the rhythmic guitar stuff like the practice recording above.

Joy Orbison has had a bit of a hard time living up to the singular brilliance of his first release, Hyph Mngo. Oddly, all of his further releases have had a lot more subtlety than Hyph Mngo; less glistening chords, crackling snares. BRKLN CLLN is reasonably old, as electronic music goes, but is one of those releases that seem to be way ahead of the curve. Stepping away from the aggressive wobble of Dubstep and even from the bass fetishisation of UK Garage, it perfectly blends elements of UK Funky, Dancehall, and garage/2-step. The shifting drum patterns, mirrored by the chord stabs, a propulsive percussion section and just the right amount of bass give it a real energy.

His latest release, BB/Ladywell, is an entirely different matter. More in the tradition of 2562, Martyn, Basic Channel, and Mike Dehnert, BB is a dubby, grooving, build of a track. It's entirely like anything Joy Orbison has released before, the step-down bassline the only clue that it might be one of his. Still rather good, but with a totally different mood to it - it's a mild groove, something to drop in the middle of a set, whereas for a long time Joy Orbison has seemed to be more concerned with being able to flatten a dancefloor with a track. A good sign?

This is for all the Mount Kimbie/James Blake fans. There's absolutely no doubt that this is a rip-off, it's something Fantastic Mr. Fox has been doing for years now. Yet there's a certain gleeful, sneaky way to how he does it. He rips off sound, but not mood; in contrast to James Blakes' melancholic, hollow-feeling tracks Evelyn is a schizophrenic sugar high - funky, groovy, and playful. It's as if he knows he's ripping people off, but does it in the most compellingly maximalistic style possible.

Finally, the game-changing tune of the year - the B side from Blawan's Fram/Iddy release on Hessle. Propulsive, menacing, angry, yet somehow incredibly danceable, Iddy is a truly incredible track. 138 bpm, yet feels so much faster - the whole track lurches and slinks, understated kicks providing the only real bass apart from a subtle sine glissando. Utterly unmixable - anything you play it with becomes irrelevant.By far Hessle's best release this year, totally reshaping what is possible with the genre.

F*ck.

What happened to you, Ocean Collective? You showed such promise on Precambrian, melding raw, sludgy riffage with progressive song composition and unusual instrumentation, even throwing in some classical influence for good measure. You were easily my favourite upcoming metal act, even though I wasn't overly fond of your prior two albums, Precambrian was such a breath of fresh air that it seemed you could do no wrong. When I heard you were returning with a two-part follow up that would continue your trend of progressive song writing, sprawling tracks and crushing riffs, I awaited with intense anticipation.

And then...

THIS.

I tried to send this in a PM but your inbox is full :p

Do you think you could your guitar tracks so I could try programming some drums for them? I've been thinking a lot lately about doing this sort of thing, I think it could be a lot of fun. And then we will sell a million albums.

This song isn't officially out as a single yet, but it showed up on A State of Trance Official Podcast 151 and was hands down the best song on it. I don't know what it is about Dash Berlin, but the beats/rhythm of his songs are always spot on, ascending on queue with the vocals, reaching such incredible (and very danceable) climax that I always find myself lost in. Plus Emma Hewitt's voice is just gorgeous. She's done quite a few tracks with DB and has always blown me away, especially when the beat drops and becomes soft and slow. Dash Berlin is quickly becoming my favorite DJ, and Emma Hewitt my favorite trance vocalist.

Really, really loving this. I cant quite put my finger on their style. Is it Indie?

The chorus really hits the nail for my style of music.

Never heard of them until now, and unfortunately it seems like the rest of their stuff is pretty sub-par, bordering on the rubbish.
