From a press release from Valve:

Subject: A note from Aperture Science

Dear Subject Name Here,

Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.

If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.

Thank you for <<RECORD SCRATCH!!!>>

PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.

E3 is certain to still bring something very interesting with regard to Portal 2. Halflife2.net will be at E3 & twittering again from the Valve room. Stay posted for more details on this next week! (This was ghost written by Glenn btw)

What is this i dont even

Portal 2 or not? Im so confused :S

I was going to say pffthaha but then I was just wondering if they got Lemony Snicket to write that.

Yay, The Crossing is back is back from the dead! :D

Either that or DotTF (Defence of the Team Fortress)

Is it bad that I forgot the Half-Life 2 episodes even existed before I came into this thread and saw some of the posts?

Realistically they aren't gonna hype fans up like this about anything less than Ep3. Huzzah!

I don't know. Valve has been letting us down lately. Hopefully it's another Orange Box type situation with EP3, Portal 2, and maybe something else. That's wishful thinking though.

It sounds portal related to me given its GLaDoS dictating the message. If it were episode 3/anything else i would have thought it would just be a standard press release.

Portal 2 trailer?

Except Ep3 is expected to feature a connection to Portal/GLaDoS/Aperture Science.

I hope they get everyone into the room with the screening and then start releasing a green gas into the room. The surprise is that it isn't a deadly neurotoxin but instead a carcinogenic gas!

Well it does specifically say 'the E3 Portal 2 surprise', but I'm thinking you're right.

Can't wait...started playing HL2 again, imo the first level where you make your way through canals and sewers is my favorite SP level of all time.
I do hope we get a slightly updated SOURCE enginem the gameplay will marvelous either way.

It won't be an Orange Box situation ... Portal 2 is too big a name now to clump it with something else, and it's going to be a full-length game this time round as well. They can make more money by releasing them all as stand-alones.

I'm curious though ... where have Valve been "letting us down lately", apart from the fact that we still haven't heard anything about Episode 3?

releasing a sequel to a game that didn't need a sequel
the rather bad UI update
steam community is on the fritz at least once a day now
everything concerning hats

ignoring, or doing bad marketing on, their main IP.

I just ignored it and I'm fine. Making games is always a good thing. If you are not interested, you don't buy them.

the rather bad UI update

I still fail to see what's bad in the new UI.

Steam community is made of... well, you know the rest ;)

ignoring, or doing bad marketing on, their main IP.

They are bringing the whole HL2 universe to Mac. And they gave us the long awaited updates. Also, the Orange Box is now a best seller again, after 3 years. If this is "ignoring" or "bad marketing"... ;)

Remade it?
Yep, sorry if I confused anyone...since Shaker's thread was the main one...I merged the two and lost the previous posts - sorry! Hacked things a bit, looks like Shaker posted this now but doesn't matter.

Apologies Porkchop, you may need to post your encounter with Doug again. Oops!

As long as it's Episode 3. What else could they possibly announce?

inb4 Left 4 Dead 3

How could they do this and not expect everyone to get hyped up for EP3?

Also,

This just confuses the hell out of me. Why cancel such a big event that was going to get all of the coverage it deserved?

Clearly!

Although booking times could be considered cryptic....in my conversation with Doug tonight he has told me Katie (former organiser of the event) has left Valve...and he has seemingly taken over the bookings. We have had to shift our appointments too.

It's starting to seem like a legitimate cancellation but I can't understand the 'surprise' part. Perhaps a short Portal 2 demo which you can play will be available?

releasing a sequel to a game that didn't need a sequel

While 'need' is a tricky word, the sequel fixed virtually everything that was wrong with the original, had significantly more content, and was far more fun. I didn't need it, but I'm sure as hell glad they made it.

Rofl @ the people saying "ep3" Did you not read how the surprise is in regards to portal 2?

So... what is it exactly that was cancelled? Was it just about showing the Portal 2 Trailer?
