Wow, I thought stick was far less common than automatic... Wtf?

Never driven a stick...

Well you and I are living in 'mur'kuh. I feel like it's impossible to live anywhere else in the world and not know how. The market here just favors Automatic because we're lazy f*cks or something.

I've never gotten good at manual transmission because I've never owned a car with one. I'm not especially good with one right now.

Manual is much more common in Europe. As far as I know most people in Ireland, the UK, France and some other places are of the general opinion that automatic cars are for people who're lazy/can't drive properly/don't like driving/are plain silly.

Well, I'm lazy and I want to listen to my music when I drive. So they're half-right.

Pretty much. The only people I know who drive automatics are women and the sort of women who always drive well under the speed limit (and piss everyone else off).

Automatic. Driving manual just seems annoying. I prefer doing things the easy way and not having to worry about shit. I can't think of many situations where I'd need more "control" over my transmission.

Plus learning how to do it sucks. I rode with my friend a couple times when he was learning how to drive manual and I was getting really aggravated when i was just a passenger, so I doubt I would like going through that when its actually me that ****s up.

It's not more work at all. Once you get used to it it's as easy as looking in the rear-view mirror. Manual really all things in favour of it. It's more control, better milage, less risk or malfunction, and it teaches you to plan your journey further ahead, as you will need to gear down in time.

Contradiction spotted. And try telling someone who's in a traffic jam every day that manual isn't more work.

I definitely prefer automatic. I don't see what's fun about driving manual, it's a repetitive, trivial task.

I enjoy driving manual because I don't drive very often, so it remains a novelty of sorts.
I tried an automatic and it had a huge pedal which just seemed goofy. I really don't think giant pedals are necessary.

Manuals are usually preferred by people who enjoy driving, not those who do it solely to get to point A to point B.

No harm there, just different strokes for different cocks.

I don't see how it's more popular in Euroland, you people have more turning and shit don't you? I'm guessing everyone's a ricer.

I don't know, I've driven stick for 6 years *all but one year* of my driving life....I've never found it work, except for when I was learning.

Learning how to operate a manual is annoying, but once you can it's great. It sounds stupid but accelerating just so, with the radio on, feeling just at the point where the revs are high and getting a perfect gear shift at the right moment is just a fantastic feeling.

Manual. Never driven an automatic, but I'm guessing I'd prefer to control shifting gears anyway. Also I expected the poll results to basically look like: Europe - manual; USA - automatic, but I see it's not the case.

O RLY?

My car is an automatic. I've never driven a stick. I'd like to learn how, but I can't see when I'd learn.

the only thing that can be annoying when driving a stick is trying to eat at the same time and needing to make several hairpin turns.

driving manual gives me a small sense of accomplishment every time i change gears perfectly. every time i drive there's a little bit of win in it for me.

I drive both. I have an older car that's stick and a newer one that's automatic. I think if you're driving around town stick is fun, when I was stuck in traffic for FIVE hours on the turnpike the other week...not so much.

Manual. You get more control, which is really good for fuel economy and winter driving. Most automatics are clunky and shifiting is delayed. Let's say you're in a situation where you have to get out of the way and FAST. Simply stomping on the gas pedal in an automatic will give you a delay for about a second THEN it'll kick into gear and you'll go flying off.

Different in a manual, gear changes happen when you want to so there's no delay unless you can't shift fast enough.

It is annoying if you live in a congested area and are always in a traffic jam, better stick to an automatic.

Manual cars are mainly for enthusiasts, people who like to drive, or people who like to get the most amount of miles/km per gallon/liter.

Stop and go is balls in a manual. I mean flat out gridlock. Also as mentioned, eating is more difficult and dangerous. Another thing not mentioned is foreplay or sex while driving, or using the old school cellphone. Other than these things, manual wins in every way, in my opinion.

Every single thing you said except for stop and go is the most irrelevant and useless arguments against manual I've ever heard. I am so sick of people doing other shit than driving WHILE driving. I've almost been run off the road/hit/etc because someone is on their cell phone, stuffing their face, putting make-up on, etc.

Unless your post is completely sarcastic, then touche.

That's why I'm glad I live in the small town I do. I've never had to spend more than 5-10 minutes in stop-go traffic. Plus, I evade those roads that bring on the stop-go traffic as much as possible. It's always filled with stupid drivers.

It's not a contradiction, as the planning will also come automaticially after a while.

Whoever can start their car moving from standstill/barely rolling at second gear needs a new car.

And traffic really isn't all that bad unless you're on an uphill. Then it's a pain.

Actually, all of those points were already made, and I was agreeing with them - manual does make things more difficult in these situations. However, I was arguing that these problems can be overlooked if they don't apply to you.

Lol, they aren't irrelevant. They are the disadvantages of manual transmission. I used to have to drive 3 hours to work in stop and go with a street/racing clutch. It sucks ass.

Also, you never ate french fries while driving? I find that hard to believe. Never fingered your girlfriend while driving? Come on, live a little. If anyone can't drive with one hand for short periods of time, they shouldn't be driving anyway. Hell, I used to drive with my knees while rolling the 4th blunt in a row. Never been in an accident.

Am I doing it right?

EDIT: anyway, I've owned the same car that Cyberpitz drives:

Mine was red but I had it painted jet black.

I like manual and automatic, though I prefer 'stick' somewhat. I might end up with a tiptronic though as my girlfriend is learning on automatic (in the UK, she is licensed for manual at home) and we'd both be happy with that.

Hell, I've done some things I shouldn't do. Doesn't mean I'm going to call a disadvantage to the transmission. Those are things you aren't supposed to be doing while driving. Anyway, if you can't steer with your legs, shift with your left hand, and finger your GF with your right hand, you're doing it wrong.

;)

Amen to that.

Yeah, I wouldn't dispute it if they banned those things (like eating while driving). I don't make a habit of it, but there have been times where I have to get it on the run. Also, hot french fries are god damn hard to resist.

BTW, I'm so mad I don't have pictures of my old RX-7. My friend took a picture once, right after I got it painted, but I haven't seen him in years. He couldn't believe how sweet it looked. (I had bought it off him)

I had $1400 rims and tires, aftermarket body kit and spoiler, brand new paint - ****ing thing was awesome. Major bitch magnet.

I had planned ahead, the rims fit on my eclipse. I miss the Rx-7, but my turbo eclipse is quick as hell though, love it.

Yes, please find that picture. I'm a sucker for good looking FC's.

I never took any pictures of it. This was before the digital camera revolution. Also, I lost touch with him, unfortunately.

Just picture an RX with a kit and brand new black paint.

I found a picture of the wheels I had on it (these are now on my Eclipse):

Chrome was a mistake; it's too heavy (50 lbs with tires!). Looks cool, but I want to get some light-weight racing wheels some day.

Most sport wheels for my car weigh half that. With 4 wheels, it adds up.

EDIT: lawl pitz, check out this RX-7 Turbo II :

What kind of clutch/turbo do you have on your eclipse?

ACT 2600 clutch, stock turbo.

Yes, it's a small turbo, but I'm a very thrifty person. I upgrade things as I go. So when the clutch went, I upgraded it. When the rotors and brake pads went, I upgraded them. When the turbo goes, I'll upgrade it, and so on.

Actually, I've got 110,000 miles on this turbo, I can't believe it's still kicking. (generally last 80K)

Both.

My 94' Nissan pickup (manual) and my dad's 00' Ford F-150 (automatic). The Ford's a piece of shit. He needs to sell it.

BTW, does anyone who lives in a neighborhood with steep hills (e.g. San Francisco) have to use the hand brake when driving uphill? The only time manual transmissions make me nervous is in these situations with some douchebag tailgating mere inches behind.

Wow, I thought stick was far less common than automatic... Wtf?

my citroen doesn't even have servo steering let alone automatic transmission.

i'm actually pretty surprised that there are so many automatics. i've driven maybe one or two in my life.

I drive a manual (lol what is this stick shit).
