I was reading an article in Macleans about one of those ever so popular 'epidemics' that periodically sweep over the states, this one known as 'sexting'. This was underage teenage friends exchanging naked/erotic/sexual pictures between them via cellphones.

This week, three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a western Pennsylvania high school who received them, are charged with child pornography.

I was wondering what your opinions were on this kind medium. Should it be allowed between a closed group of friends as long as it isn't mass spread? Should it not be allowed at all? Should they be able to spread it willy-nilly?

I know that in Canada it is NOT illegal for underage teens to possess/carry naked/sexual photos of one another as long as it is consensual and kept private.
 
It should be allowed, as long as copies are sent to me.
 
It's private. It was intended to be viewed by specific people. How would anybody else get their hands on the pictures?
 
Guys suck at keeping nude pics of girls to themselves.
 
I personally have no issue with it... as long as the stupid kids realize that they WILL be distributed. It will happen.

Once that distribution happens, a guy to his friends... friends to the internet or however it goes... things become really hairy with the law.

In the Pennsylvania case a teacher found them on one of the cellphones.
 
Wait, are the laws in parts of the states still structured in such a way you could be charged with child porn posession if you have a picture of yourself, naked?

...and you're underage, don't forget that qualifier.

Censoring ftl though. I am a liberal in the European sense of the word so I am against government interfering with private stuff like this. Justice should be served to people who use the medium for illegal means, but the medium itself should be left alone.
 
I've never managed to get photo-messaging to work on my phone. I was once sent a nude pic completely out of the blue and it gave that message "go to such and such a website to claim the pic" and I went to it at school and everyone saw and GOD IT WAS HOT.

When I was in middle school in alaska, the albino kid at our school was in the library showing us the website whitehouse dot com. We all got a huge kick out of that.

He was pretty awesome.
 
I've sexted for a few years, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Jessie was trying to be strong. She wanted to warn other parents and kids. But Jessie's mom, Cynthia Logan, says the teasing turned to torture.

"She was called filthy names, things thrown at her," said Cynthia. "Every single place she went they knew about that picture, they saw the picture. They knew about the picture! It's abuse. She was abused."

Cynthia says the moment her daughter's private picture was sent out for everyone to see, things spiraled out of control.

Jessie's grades plummeted, she started skipping school and Cynthia says when Jessie would go to school, she would hide in the bathroom to avoid being teased.

Jessie's family and friends knew how much she was struggling to move on but they had no idea how low Jessie had fallen.

Two months after Jessie spoke with the media she went to the funeral of a boy who had committed suicide.

After the funeral, she came home and killed herself.

Eight months later, that horrifying moment was almost unbearable for Cynthia to recall.

"I walked over into her room and saw her hanging. Her cell phone was in the middle of the floor,? said Cynthia Logan.

Cynthia found her daughter hanging in the closet.

What seemed like high school bullying changed the Logan family forever.

Cynthia says the fault doesn't only lie with the police, but also with the school.

No explanation can comfort Cynthia or her family. She believes Jessie took her life to escape the relentless teasing and feels like the people who were supposed to protect Jessie, failed her.

"The police department didn't protect her. The school didn't protect her. She had no one," said Cynthia.

Because Cynthia knows she can't turn back the clock, she wants to change the laws.

She says she wants "sexting" to stop and for the people involved to be held accountable.
