So... I got PS3

But wait MS does allow companies themselves to provide dedicated servers for their games on live?

So, how are the packages looking like for the PS3?

60 gig discontinued but, it plays PS2 games.
80 gig is discontinued? Emulates PS2 games?
40 gig doesn't play PS2 games and has a few ports and other stuff missing?

upcoming 120 gig and price cuts?

Wait the 80 gig used software emulation, if it could use software emulation then so can the 40 gig.
And it's going to be patched in right?

It still amazes me at how both ms and sony packed their consoles with cpu power but gave them so little ram,
it doesn't make sense considering how important ram is and how cheap it is.

The thing is, is that when you're on Live, it checks your bandwith and see if you are eligible for hosting or not. If you just start off, you obviously don't have a ranking so sometimes it may randomly give you hosting duties to see how it handles, and if it sees you're doing shitty it won't do it again.

In all of my games, I've never even thought of to yell "WTF P2P SUCKS". You don't notice it at all.

The only time you will notice that is when the host quits the game, and then the game pauses and goes to the next eligible host.

Obviously all of this is done in the background (except for when a host quits when it says "Looking for host..." usually) so it's all fine and dandy.

All of the PS3 tech has successfully been shrunken. This could mean a smaller, quieter, and possibly cheaper PS3 in the near future.
Firstly it is a pretty darn quiet machine and secondly I think the shrinkage of some key components will help with allowing it to run much cooler than the furnace-level at which it currently runs (I hope at least).

A further note about P2P vs Dedicated Servers is this currently ongoing issue:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/851/851033p1.html

The company of each game needs to set up dedicated servers and must maintain them, so even if you and a random friend of yours across the country ten years from now want to play a game of Resistance on your PS3... whoops you can't! servers don't exist. P2P never has that problem.

The issue in the link is that in Austrailia obviously they will need their own dedicated servers or they get a shitfest of lag. Well, EA basically said screw that and is not going to be setting up Multiplayer support down-under, so Medal of Honor 2 for the Wii doesn't have MP support down there.

Have you had overheating problems with your ps3? I have had my 60gb since release, and I play tf2 for hours on end, and leave it one downloading movies and such, and I haven't had a heat problem so far, I always check it to see how hot its running, just by feeling around, and it stay relatively cool.

I've only had my ps3 freeze maybe 3 or 4 times the whole entire time I've had it. I have gamefly so I play it constantly (since my computers a little out of date) and I LOVE BLUETOOTH CONTROLLERS, always have one plugged in and charging while playing and the charge seems to last forever. I've never had a problem with it losing signal, or being laggy. I remember when we first got our Wii (before the charge docks came out) I spent probably 20 bucks a month in batteries lol

Either way, all my friends own xbox and hate ps3 (because they can't afford it, or have never played it) and I just can't help but laugh as they send in their second xbox due to red ring syndrome. The games are starting to catch up, and xbox is slowly losing its lead platform development spot. This year ps3 has a killer game lineup coming, and with wireless internet, double the storage capacity, bluetooth and hi definition dvd playback, free online component with dedicated servers, excellent friends system (maybe not perfect but still very very functional), and a great online marketplace (the possibility of DVR capabilities), linux, picture/video editing software (Eye Create is FREE!)Home on the way with achievements and unlockables, etc. etc. I am very happy with my purchase.

Oh and btw, there was a sony bashing thread on here a few weeks ago about no skype on psp, well they have it now. Looks like they were just ironing out the bugs, correct me if i'm wrong.

The only thing sony is a fault for is a piss poor marketing campaign, and a sub par launch lineup.

should I buy ratchet and clank or uncharted?

Your probably going to get more play time from R&C but Uncharted is just so cool, I'd get that if I were you. (but graphically both games are brilliant, you really can't go wrong with either)

but i've heard uncharted gameplay mostly involves around duck and shoot, much like gears of war.

and I ****ing hated gears of war. that game is just overrated.

Wait resistance doesn't let you set up your own game, you can only play on company owned dedicated servers. Dammed that sucks monkey balls.

Resistance 2'll have PS3 dedicated servers, I've heard.

It might not be for you - Uncharted is like Gears of War meets Tomb Raider. I like the combat and think it looks absolutely stunning. The exploration is similar to Prince of Persia. I enjoyed Ratchet and Clank, too, but found it got quite samey rather quickly. You'll level up the weapons you like in no time and 90% of the game is pretty generic, if fun, 3rd person adventure. I came to it staight after Mario Galaxy and the difference in quality really showed.

Give the Uncharted demo a try. There's more to it than the fighting, which is different enough to GoW, and it's nice to have a good old fashioned adventure game. It's the closest thing to you'll get to Indiana Jones :)

No no no. I too have a 60GB and it has never been a problem per say, but it just seem to run extra hot. Put your hand on the right side after playing anything for a while and see what I mean--its a little like a space heater! :p

Yeah, mine froze twice--once during POTC (which sucked and I sold back) and once during Assassin's Creed (but that was the game's fault and they have since patched it so it runs fine now).

And for anyone wondering about what game to get, Uncharted is clearly the best PS3 game out there (imho), but R&C is also extremely good, as is CoD4 interestingly enough. Oblivion GOTY edition is great too and looks and runs beautifully. Assassin's Creed looks gorgeous too, but it gets a little boring about halfway through. Motorstorm is awesome for racing alone or with friends, esp. if you like off road rally-ish racing games. Heavenly Sword (as some have said) is a rental--but a must rent!! Ican't think of other must-plays atm....

PS3 Controller: 19 hours
Wii Controller: 37 hours
Xbox360 Controller: 57 hours

For both Wii and 360 they have rechargeable battery packs (if you don't have rechargeable batteries). I can go a LONG time without charing my 360's controllers. It's so awesome.

(insert Sony hating/Wii fanboy comment here)

I'll consider a PS3 once they get their SKUs under control and have a better selection of games. I'm not gonna get jobbed while they continually screw around with HDD capacity, BC, price, etc. These are exactly the reasons I don't early adopt.

But, looks like 2008 is probably going to be the year they get their sh*t together. Honestly, at times it seems like the PS3 is their first console.

I'm getting PS3 if by either this summer or near the end of the year the following happens:

- I get a job (either at Microsoft or my college as a summer instructor)
- Sony announces their new SKU which replaces the higher-end 80gb model that doesn't lose BC and a bunch of ports and shit.
- MGS4 or LBP stay exclusive (if either of those titles jump ship to 360 land, then sorry Sony, no money from me).

I don't get people that run out and buy the latest and greatest console ASAP. :p

LOL @ Xbox 360 owners that have sent their console in for the 360th time.

LOL @ PS3 owners that have been screwed with SKU's, capacity, backward compatibility, etc.

LOL @ Wii owners who are complaining about the lack of third-party support.

I'm upgrading to a quad-core and a 8800GT in a couple of months. It's a good time to be a PC gamer!

Once they get these things ironed out, then I'll consider the PS3. Until then, I don't see the point in buying obsolete/shoddily engineered hardware that's gonna break or become obsolete in just three months as new SKU's are released. Don't get me wrong, I have faith that Sony will pull through, but I won't be around to care for a long while as I'll be too busy getting on with my career as well as life's other many issues. :p

The short version?

Next-gen games = Awesome

Next-gen *console* hardware = Shite

BTW: I LOL'ed at that Dr. Evil .gif AHA-Lambda.

My PS3 is one of the most impressive pieces of hardware that I have ever bought. It is a seriously well-designed machine and any version with BC can be easily upgraded in the hard drive department, so size is not a limitation that need be considered. It is my favorite console of this generation currently (even though I have more games for my Wii and play the Wii more often thanks to GHIII) due to its ability to recognize my external HDD packed with .mp4 and divx files. Love it.

Waiting for the games you want is a very good thing to do. Waiting for Sony to stop bring in newer versions for the bigger hard drives doesn't make sense to me. It would just be a bonus for me. When the games you want hit the shelves then just get a PS3 and if you must have a bigger drive then upgrade it yourself. And BC is nice but even with hardware BC there are some games with issues. If I wanted to play a PS2 game I would just get a PS2 since it is a similar price increase for a PS3 unit with BC. I just went with a 40gb and it runs quieter too.

The only title I'd be excited enough about to get a PS3 would be Resident Evil 5. Though it's not a PS3 exclusive anymore. It would simply be impossible to play a game on PC whose controls are formatted like the RE series and I'd have no choice but to get a PS3 then. I do like other titles like R&C, but being that I'll be leaving for military duty after I graduate. Well, I won't have time to play anything for a long while anyways. Sometimes I hate being an adult. :( The Xbox 360 has good titles too, but most of the games that are out for that console I could just as easily purchase for PC. The 360 has some good exclusives too, but like I said previously, the hardware itself is shite. :p Everyone I've discussed the 360 with has either already purchased their third console or it's been in for repairs for the bizillionth time. I'd rather not be arsed tbh. :dozey: Especially since I've had my PS2 since it first came out back in 2000 and I have had 0 problems with it ever since.

lol @ all those who think the PS3 will eventually beat the Xbox 360 in terms of sales, library, etc.

Enjoy your Taladega Nights, Game of the Year addition.

Blah! :/

It will always have a lesser library of games to the 360.

I hate you. :(

The only library that matters to me is the one on my shelf. Currently, it looks like this:

Wii titles: 9
PS3 titles: 4
360 titles: 3

I currently have 6 games for the Xbox 360, and I only got it this christmas. Bioshock, COD4, DOA4 (I going to return this, it's just random button mashing), Marvel Ultimate Alliance (came with my 360), Forza Motorsport 2 (also came with my 360), and Orange Box. GTA4 is currently under my radar and perhaps SF4 if it's anything like the originals (which I enjoyed alot) and it isn't a button mashing feast like DOA.

OH No it wont! :frown:

*in G-man voice* We'll see... about that!

Don't. ;(

Don't worry, I didn't mean it literally. 3>
