Yes, when I bring it up my sister generally says something along the lines of "well she'd probably punch someone right now. Or sleep with them". She looks to Starbuck for an alternative reaction :)
 
Harry Brown:

It sticks to a tried and true formula but it does it very well; this film is essentially a british copy of gran torino with Michael Caine. He delivers an as always excellent performance, and this film really does quite shockingly portray gangs and hoodlums in quite a shocking manner that is probably not that far from the truth.

If you enjoyed gran torino or are just a fan of micahel caine in general, I definitely recommend this movie :)
 
The Taking of Pelham 123 7/10

ok movie, but lots of repetitive talking and sometimes Travolta didn't seem like he was all in it. otherwise it was a good rental and the action sequences were nice.
 
The Conversation 9/10

It was the first Coppola film I've ever seen, and it left a great impression on me. Between the on-screen drama and the special film and audio effects used, the perfect amount of suspense and paranoia was created. It created these metaphysical events where you wondered if Harry Caul was actually being watched or if it was all in his head. The best part about this is that you never really know in the end.

There were also some horror aspects at the end, and it seemed to borrow some of the tension from Kubrick's The Shining, specifically the part when the huge pools of blood flow out of the elevators. For those who have seen The Conversation, they probably know what part I'm talking about.

Another way I compare it to The Shining is the high quality of sound design. From the very beginning, there are some very special things being done with the audio that clues the audience into either what is happening or possibly what is not. At times, the sound is very instrumental in raising the tension, just as it was in The Shining.
 
The Train (1964) 10/10

Utterly fantastic, I love that bit at the end where Col. von Waldheim confronts Labiche.

Jesus Christ, I can't believe I never watched this before.

Simply put: Hollywood action at its finest.
Quake rail guns, skydiving towards falling parachutes, dodging jets while doing said skydiving, fighting ontop of cargoship containers, shootouts at a zoo, unleashing a horde of alligators to devour your enemies, blowing the heads off of said alligators, belt knives, and stuff.

It was a blast to watch after having such a boring day at work yesterday.
 
2012 - 7/10

Ok movie with lots of death and destruction but weak on plot and there were lots of frustrating moments with characters. Some of the movie was annoying while a lot of it was awesome to marvel at. Glad I didn't pay a dime to see this today

The Thing - 8/10

Very awesome special effects for its time, great plot, plenty of action and suspense and overall Kurt Russell was da bomb! Must watch movie
 
Been a Hitchcockian week; making my way through Rear Window, Vertigo (what an incredibly dark abrupt ending) and North by Northwest. Not much to say, the camera work, story telling is just so far ahead of his time. Will be making my way through his early work.
 
Star Trek - 8/10

I didn't see this in theatres, but I waited and rented it when the movie came on Blu-ray. I didn't have huge expectations before watching it, but I was pleasantly surprised and I am not even a Star Trek fan at all. I liked it. Good story, decent action and acting. I can't believe Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wrote the plot for this movie! How did they not write as good a story for Transformers! (that hope is out the window now)

The story was a little puzzling at times, but then it started to come together in the end.


Also, one thing - everytime Leonard Nimoy spoke, I thought of one thing:

New Moon - 2/10 - Jesus Christ no. Not even in the league of "so bad it was entertaining". Tedious lectures have passed faster than this inanely boring pile of shit.
 
The Men Who Stare at Goats: 6/10

It was okay.

The biggest thing I liked was, of course, Clooney. He was brilliant as usual. Most of the lead people were pretty good. The story was interesting as well. However, if I'm sitting in a theater thinking "Damn, when is this movie going to be over?" it can't be too good of a movie.

Science that didn't make sense, dumb villain, dumb scenes, etc.

I thought that it was a great movie that was a lot of fun to watch and I'm just a passing Star Trek fan that's starting to get into the series.

Your argument is completely invalid. Judging shit against a background of more shit doesn't change the fact that you're placing value on, well, shit. It's like saying "Oh Star Trek is great because the other movies that came out this year were Wolverine and My Bloody Valentine". That doesn't make a good movie at all.

And nothing "makes" that movie. It's trash.
 
Yeah, the fact that rotten tomatoes user reviews gave it 95% and top critics gave it 92%...


However, what it boils down to is thats your opinion and whats mine.

Fantastic Mr Fox: 9/10

Just saw Fantastic Mr Fox tonight. Loved it. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Smart writing, funny characters, lovely sets, and just lots of quirky animation throughout. I highly recommend it. Its the best animated movie I've seen this year. Yes, better than UP. The animation, while a bit rough looking, only takes a moment to get used to, and in fact is quite amazing what they can do, considering they used real animal fur. I never read the original Roald Dahl story, so I dont know how it compares in story and quality. But so far this is the best movie I have seen that has been based on one of his works. Or, at the very least, the most enjoyable (well, maybe tied with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory). While I didn't laugh really hard very often, the movie did have me (as well as the audience) chuckling constantly. Lots of witty and dead pan humor.
 
The Hurt Locker 8/10

I wasn't quite ready for how good this was. I had heard it was boring, but I have to say I was engrossed all the way through. I especially like how it portrayed the soldiers nervousness when they were unsure of the situations, like the part with the rooftops and the camcorder guy, which gave the viewer the same feeling of not knowing if these people are civilians or insurgents.
The only thing I probably didn't like was:-

How the British SAS were made out to be useless when the shit hit the fan, which obviously is really not the case.
Apart from that I was pleasantly surprised.
 
Life - 8/10

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy were a ****ing trip. Even better when they became old men.
 
Paranormal Activity:

Ok it wasn't unbelievably terrifying as everyone said BUT it was definitely scary and I have to give credit where it is due: any horror movie that is actually scary is a VERY rare thing!

Problem I had was most of the movie only really builds up a feeling of unease and tension rather than fear. However it builds up very well cos the last 20 minutes are ****ING SCARY!! I ain't gonna sleep tonight.

I would certainly say to people to try this movie out just to give it a try :)
 
Ninja Assassin 7/10

Now here is a dumb action movie that manages to:

A) Not take itself too seriously
B) Not overload with absolutely retarded humor
C) Provide me with decent ACTION

Yeah, nothing really makes sense in the context that some scenes made it look like one ninja could kill a small army without being seen and others makes it seem like they are only slightly better than a guy with a machine gun, and other silly things, but it's still fairly entertaining, ridiculous, and a good continuation of my familiy tradition of going to see an over the top action movie on Thanksgiving. Didn't dissapoint me like that bastard, Transporter 3.

Body of Lies 5.5/10

You can tell that this movie aspires to be pretty powerful and meaningful, but it really just completely falls short. Russel Crowe's character is pants on head retarded to the point where you just can't see what advantages he does bring to the table. Events that seem like they should have significant impact on everything don't really result in anything. The conclusion is fairly good, though, and it's a generally well polished movie that I liked a fair bit.

loved how much action and gore was in this movie. has a crappy plot but who cares when your having fun with the heavy amount of action. call it 'Asian God of War' because some of the same weapons and amount of blood were present. if you enjoyed movies like Kill Bill and any Jet Li movie you'll like this one
 
Saw 5 and 6. 9/10

There's going to be a 7, looking forward to it. The story is insane as hell, reminds me of Death Note by the time 6 was finished.
 
Crimes and Misdemeanors - 9/10

First off, Woody Allen. You can barely ever go wrong with him.

But this is the darkest Woody Allen film I've ever seen. There are great stretches of seriousness and pondering in this film, along with a little bit of suspense. Comedy is injected into the film throughout, usually by Allen, but it doesn't take away from the serious, impending tone of the movie.

The movie ends in a very un-Hollywood way, which I love, but it does end on a good message, so you get the best of both worlds.

I thought they were hired guns/mercenaries? One of them gunned down a runner saying that they still would get payed whether the targets they brought back were alive or dead.

I quite enjoyed Hurt Locker, too. I saw the adverts in the cinema a while back and thought it looked like high-octane trash with some laughably stupid review tag lines. Was quite surprised by it when I watched it the other day on a whim. I was expecting gun porn and over the top firefights like... well, near enough every ****ing show based in Iraq/Afghanistan, except for Generation Kill which is amazing. Pretty good film.
 
The Hurt Locker was a pleasant surprise.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 8.7/10. A great western and comedy, had me tears of laughter in some parts. It went a bit down hill during the Bolivia scene and looked nothing like Bolivia. On to 'The Sting'.

Dragon Ball Evolution

From the perspective of someone who doesn't know the story: 5/10

The story was relatively cliche...boy likes girl, boyfriend is a dick, so she feels sorry for the good guy, boy gets girl in the end. The fight scenes were pretty meh, but at least there were a couple of jokes in there that made me laugh. All in all, a relatively sub-par movie that I am glad I didn't go out of my way of seeing.

From the perspective of someone who DOES know the story: 0/10

WTF HOW CAN HE TRANSFORM WITH THE ECLIPSE AND NOT THE ****ING FULL MOON!?!?!? Where is his tail? Why is Chi-Chi a pro at Martial Art? Why isn't Roshie an old man? Why does Bulma have a degree in Tactical Firearms? She used guns ONCE that I remember, and she dropped it after shooting Goku once. The Kamehameha is a joke. Lighting candles? Shit, I remember him destroying many Red Ribbon Army ships with his first attempt at it! King Piccolo used the mighty Oozeru *or however they spelled it* to help take over the world. Why the shit was there a Sayan on Earth prior, and why wasn't it destroyed/sold?

That's all I can remember off of the top of my head.

Hurt Locker was great but I was expecting it to be great because it is by BRIDE OF CAMERON
 
Zombieland - 8/10...
Saw this with my girl a few hours ago.
Hilarious and gory to boot, definitely up there as one of my favorite zombie flicks.
