My dad bought an electronic chart for a navigation system. The top is part of the manual and the bottom is the back of the box with the chart (on an SD card).

What.

I don't see anything wrong with that, the card says not to try to add (or "backup", though reading it shouldn't harm anything) anything to the card, the manual just says to hook it up so it can verify the chart. These are not in conflict. That's a comma after "multi-card reader", not a full stop. You need to read that as one sentence... just replace the comma with "and then".

I assume it is as you say, but I think it is bad wording on their part - they should have either ditched the "inserting" part or they should have written "and (then)" instead of a comma in there. It's just a badly structured sentence which technically means:

Those actions will damage the chart data and render the card useless:
-inserting into a pc or multi-card reader
-attempting to back-it-up onto your pc
-attempting to add files to it
