London and Birmingham Riots

Major riots have been taking place in London over the weekend and now are starting a bit in Birmingham tonight. All kicked off because a London cabbie was shot in an incident with armed police on Thursday, it was part of a police operation in parts of London investigating gun crime.

There were peaceful protests Saturday in Tottenham which turned violent, and the violence has been carrying on over Sunday night and again tonight.

Hope that anyone who lives in London is staying safe!
 

Anyway, certain riots I think are legitimate (the protests last year concerning raised student tuitions come to mind), but this one seem to only hurt the working classes, as all they do is destroy their own neighbourhoods. "Let's steal some lager from our local tobacco store, that will certainly bring about reform to the capitalist system!" Idiots.
 
If we had a riots for all the unarmed folks who have been shot by our police... '

Anarchy in the UK baby. Actually makes me glad I'm sat in the middle of nowhere for a change.

Can't believe all of these fires though, absolutely disgraceful.
 
Wouldn't be surprised if they hit the shopping centre down the road from me. It's pretty crazy though, it's all happened pretty quickly.
 
I read that some papers where distributed to the rioters in how to avoid being caught or somthing

Just heard on SkyNews (which has better coverage than BBC :O ) that the shooting was NOT fatal, thank god for that!
 
Just a bunch of violent thugs that need putting down really, there is just absolutely no reason for them to do this. I know a mate down there who had quickly abandon his flat with his room mates because they saw masked men approaching their street 0_o

We don't get very many cool riot situations in games, unfortunately. Riots in games are fun.
 
Sick of these scumbags destroying shops, homes and cars all over the place. It's absolutely insane and the police are so stretched and helpless. Huge gangs of kids...40+ in number just marauding and torching things. All our leaders and cabinet are on holiday and only now are they coming back after 3 days of rioting. It's spread to a retail park about 5 minutes from where I live in North-East London and it's beyond a fear thing now. Most of my friends who still live around this area are voicing major discontent and it's got to the point of vigilantism. There aren't enough police and people want to defend their communities, why not?

The areas police are in, they have no rubber bullets, no tear gas, no water cannons. They just blockade roads in riot gear to protect the fire service to put out all the fires. The rioters just move on and torch something on the next street. I can't see how it's going to stop with the blackberry messenger alerts co-ordinating the people on the street to target specific locations and the police unable to keep up.

Hope you guys are looking forward to the Olympics in 2012 in East London. Most of the games are around Stratford if you look on the map linked earlier, be sure to come visit! I live right near the place in NE London called Chingford.
 
Well don't go doing any vigilante shit yourself, don't want you hurt or killed.

Does the UK not have any effective high tech anti rioting devices like those sound guns or... oh here's an idea... TASER ARRAY! Muahahaha.

EDIT: So are these those Chav things you guys are always on about? Or is thing something more significant?

Also, watching that video, I think it would be awesome being a riot cop. That was badass. They were so orderly and coordinated, any time I see rioters versus riot cops I always imagine it like the Roman legions versus the Gauls. Its pretty much the exact same thing except in fewer numbers, and everyone has more clothes on.

I have a friend on IRC right next door to several neighbourhood where the rioting has been bad, scary!

Anyway, these ****ers should be so grateful they live in a Western democracy and not say Syria or such or they'd be gunned down like animals.

Edit: British friend told me there are talks of deploying the military to restore order, any Brit that can confirm this?

The worst thing about this all is all these arsehole chavs are just doing this for the sake of doing it. They have no political motives or want to over throw the government etc. At least riots in the past have had some kind of goal rather then just running around trashing peoples homes and businesses.

WHYYYYYYYYYY, the question is why. Why don't they have those things. That's just asking for ineffectiveness against unruly crowds.
 
It is well past political motivation, people are seeing the opportunity to cause chaos and steal things, TV reports indicate that the majority of shops busted are high value technology shops and such like. Most reports also indicate it is mainly young people taking to the streets.

It is a meeting of members of the Government and Police etc. to respond to crisis events. Something along those lines at least.

Seriously though, it won't be long before Cameron will have to take a page from Ghadaffi's / Assad's book and bring out the military. It seems the police isn't able to contain this.

EDIT Watching the BBC at the moment, an interview with some professor saying that the riots are basically the government's fault for not listening to the "disillusioned youths". Seriously wtf? This is not the time to be politically correct. That approach evidently didn't work.
