I loved Portal so much upon completion, that I ended up sending a mail of appreciation to Gabe Newell. I was just so moved by the whole experience. It was - and still is - unreal.

I was thinking more of a longer than "long" range weapon with slightly more accuracy. You know, that shoots bullets in an instant as opposed to bolts, whose speed can be measured with a calendar. Possibly mounted, possibly not. Could be used to take out a few periferal guards, before resuming...

You have to remember in what area the HL2-universe is situated in. Namely a place based on Eastern Europe. As for the antlions and "breeding season", I assume the whole "breeding season" makes them a lot more territorial and therefore a lot more agressive.
