How do people handle capped internet?

So I recently got a router with built in traffic monitoring. That was about 5 hours ago, and after a few games of black ops, and watching some tv shows on netflix I've downloaded a little over 5gb of data; so that's, roughly, 185gb of data a month. No torrents, no illegal file transfers, just what I consider to be average use: netflix, ps3, internet.

I remember seeing some folks on here talking about their internet caps, and it just makes me wonder...how do you get used to this? It seems like such a scam, because if my provider started to use caps I'd have to effectively buy their TV package so I can watch tv, instead of using netflix.

I have a 30GB limit that I share with two other people, Solution: We don't download ****ing anything. Gaming isn't too hard on your limit assuming you aren't downloading lots of custom maps, but if you have a small limit watching movies and shit online is just out unless you plan it well. My advice: Just keep an eye on it and just understand how much you're using and make sure everyone you're sharing it with understands too (it was hard enough getting one of my flatmates to understand the concept).

Recently upgraded my cap to 35G, I usually end up spending a fortune topping it up though.

Sounds horrible, thank goodness I have unlimited traffic.

Well I'm not capped at the moment, but I was really curious about how much data I go through. My router does have the option to alert me when I get close to my limit and even turn off internet traffic completely, but I hope it never comes to that.

I had a 20gb limit back 9-10 years ago! NINE TO TEN ****ING YEARS AGO!

Limits, especially ones that small, do not embrace the future, they promote stagnation.

WORD,I recently got bumped up to a 40Mbps down and 32Mps up line with Verizon super happy with their service....some of my friends still have ****ing dial up dunno how they survive lol. There should be a law against caps btw.I really think it's a scam.

What router did you get? My parents desperately need a new one as theirs is dire.

Here's how I handle my 25gb cap: go over it constantly.

Problem solved.

I dunno what I generally use but I assume I'd hit the cap just in porn...

We don't have a cap yet. If they try to stick us with one we'll switch to one without. That's how we will deal with a cap. (of course if they all go to caps I guess we'll just have to watch out internet like we used to watch our minutes on our cellphones)

My limit is 60 GB between three of us. Normally I dont hit that cap, but Shogun 2 screwed me over in that respect for this month :/

I don't really have a cap, per say, but Digis does this retarded ass thing called "throttling" where they cut your bandwidth in half, if you go over a certain amount. So, if I'm playing any game, and my sister is watching netflix and my brother is watching vids on youtube, we have no bandwidth at all.

I used to have a 75GB limit, which I frequently exceeded (after which, it was like two bucks per GB or something). Get out the checkbook.

I know that At&T's new cap doesn't even come close to comparing to all of yours, but it sure has made me wary of my usage. I typically will do about 200Gb a month... just by myself. I share this with 2 other people in my apartment. Thankfully, they don't do a lot of online gaming, Netflix, or torrents. One of them doesn't have a TV in his room, so he constantly streams from various sites.

Also, I'm pretty sure AT&T gives you three months of warnings before they actually start charging you for going over. To sum this up, I'd have a pretty hard time with caps at 20-30 Gb. No question about that.

Edit: AT&T U-Verse and Comcast cap is 250 Gb for those who didn't already know that.

1024kb/s with 8gb limit, 6gbs off peak 11PM-11AM and 2gbs on peak. $65 per month for that, ****ing satellite. -_-

Heard rumors of this becoming the standard stateside eventually. I ****ing hope not.

Do you have any other alternative ISP's in your area? I would switch ASAP if I had ATT myself. I just got Time Warner Wideband (50mbs/5) and it's pretty amazing. You could probably share it with 5+ people easily as well.

I just went from 12GB a month to Unlimited. I handled it just like when I had dial-up, just don't use it.

Same. Thank goodness my electric office offers an unlimited fiber connection for $34 a month. :v

About as much as I love being force fed 30'' of black cock every day that my contract is live.

I have a 250 gig cap that I've never hit. Or, if I have hit it, the overage charge was paid for without anyone paying attention. Is there any way to check how much you're using, without some kind of special router?

EDIT: Found this software: NetWorx. It tells you speeds and etc, but more importantly, gives you weekly and monthly reports on how much you've used. Should help me figure out if Im actually causing our bill to be higher than it aught to be.

Thanks for the link Krynn, this is great. I've been wanting something like this.

I think every ISP these days has some cap where if you're generating some ungodly amount, they limit it. They just don't tell you unless you do it.

That is true, at least for the Netherlands.

I believe that limit is 250GB for all Irish ISPs.

I'm curious as to how much of my bandwidth is used while hosting ARMA games. No doubt it pales in comparison to my downloading/streaming habits, but I've always been curious as to how much it actually does require.

I got the Netgear WNDR3700-100NAS, and so far it's been pretty good.

The router keeps a track of your daily download/upload and averages it all as well for the month; that was one of the reasons I got it. I think that dd-wrt firmware does it as well, but they don't support my router.

That is the day we topple the monopoly stranglehold the phone companies have on the land lines giving them rights and no other smaller company to use those lines.

That day has come and passed without so much as an eyebrow raised.
