Films: Rate and Discuss

Inception - 9/10

Does a very good job of presenting a fairly complex plot device without being convoluted and that still makes sense at the end.

Repo Men Awesome/10

was totally expecting a generic action movie and what I got instead was an amazing movie with plenty of story and action. I will buy this on bluray when it comes down because it was something different in the sea of crap movies out there

Clash of the Titans 7.5/10

decent amount of action, cgi wasn't that bad, and overall easy to follow plot and characters. i liked some of the lightly connected mythology, but from taking Latin class this is Hollywood at its mediocrity. to be honest a 14 yr old could have written the script but thats not a bad thing if your not taking this movie seriously. lets just say i wouldn't have paid to see this in the theaters.
so not a bad movie, but unfortunately its my resting day off and I laid around all day and did practically nothing, which made me doze off for a few mins at a time when someone was talking

The Expendables - 7/10

Made me laugh a few times (the scene with Arnie and Bruce was one for this history books, there's a line in there that is just ***king hilarious), and the action is on par with that of the latest Rambo; close, shakey camera, extremely violent gore etc.

I just felt there wasnt quite enough of it, and when it finally comes, its all over too quick. The ending was kinda cool, there just isnt enough lighting, and the camera feels like it so all over the place thats its like watching the robots fight in the first Transformers - you see movement and hear lots of grunting, but cant quite make out what is actually happening.

Its mind-numbing, the story is a joke, I cant even name a single of the main characters as their names are pretty much never used, there is a strong sense of history and like-clockwork between the group during the action and during the 'comical' moments, but you never get attached.

There are some ***king cool moments though, Statham is a serious bad-ass, and the realism is pretty damn awesome. A certain shotgun will testify to that. Lots of knife slashing and stabbing and throwing, lots of fist punching and some UFC style moments, with Statham always seeming to be the best at it with some real ''oh hell yeah'' moments.

Its great action, but its also forgettable. Hyped up to be let down a bit. Jet Lee also felt out of place.

Oh, and Sly; your face is sagging to the point where you look like you're made of wax. Which hasnt quite melted enough. You're getting too old now.

Machete -- 8/10

Damn this movie was everything I was hoping for and much, much more. If you liked either of the "Grindhouse" movies, or any actual grindhouse schlock from the 70's and 80's, you wont be disappointed from Machete. Pretty much kicked ass all the way through, though there are a few problems. Jessica Alba, while very hot, wasn't that great. Some of her key scenes were almost embarrassingly bad. Not really her fault as an actor, its just that I couldn't take her seriously at all. Then there's Lindsay Lohan. As soon as her face was shown the whole audience let out a groan. I actually think she did a good job (for what little she was shown), but I do have to admit, for being naked half the time on screen, she didn't show enough skin. Er, enough of the right skin. Despite that, I gotta say it was pretty ballsy of her to play a character that's pretty much a riff on herself. But overall, Trejo is what made the movie. Hope he gets more leading roles from now on.

oh, and
Steven Seagal's death scene was so bad that it was good. One of the funniest parts in the movie

Scott Pilgrim vs. the world - 10/10

I seriously couldn't fault it in any way. Had an absolute blast watching it. Granted the material it came from must be amazing, but its the direction of it and how it must have stayed almost perfectly in a tangent with the comic material itself.

Being a musician in a band myself, I could relate really well to a lot of it, and absolutely adored the music face off's. The fight scenes were absolutely epic, like taken straight out of the book from the Matrix, but given a comedic spin. The visuals were stunning and there was plenty of excellent tongue in cheek humour. Edgar Wright absolutely nailed this one, and considering he did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, I'm not surprised. Loved every bit of it.

Scott Pilgrim Versus the World - Good
A very enjoyable film with lots of funny moments but doesn't come together very coherently. The comic book and video game effects and HUD stuff was cute and a lot of good jokes (I loved the vegan stuff) but it just didn't come together very well. I think its main problem was having to fit all seven fights into one film while keeping a good story and there just wasn't enough time to do both.

The Fourth Kind 2/10

When I saw the preview for this movie about a year ago, I thought it looked very cool. It looked creepy, intense, and said it was based on real events (which I didn't buy into). I never got around to seeing it when it hit theaters, but tonight I was bored, and was scrolling through the movies that I could rent on demand, and I saw it. I purchased it, sat down, got something to drink, and got ready for a creepy alien adventure. I was sadly disappointed.

It starts up with this woman, telling you that these events that you are about to see are reenactments of what actually happened, and are highly disturbing. Right after I heard this, I knew it was going to be a bad movie. Throughout the entire film, you would see the reenactment film right next to the "real" thing. It was the most annoying shit ever. And you're probably saying "Well I mean, at least they don't have the audio spliced together as well", but they did that as too. Another thing, every time they went to a location, or heard a recording during the movie, they would tell you all this bullshit about it. I guess it was to add realism or something, but it was not needed at all.

The woman in the movie had two kids that were in the film as well, both of which I wanted to kick the living **** out of. The little boy is a rebellious pre-teen ginger, who is recovering from the loss of their father, so he blames all the shit on his mom. Towards the end of the film you realize that he is a little asshole, and has no connection to his mother at all. The little girl is blind for some reason, which is never explained why, except for the fact that it happened after her father died, so it sort of leads to the mother again. She has a somewhat annoying voice, but it was handleable because she didn't have many lines.

You don't see any aliens, and all the "real" footage goes to static whenever something interesting happens. All I can say is, do not rent or buy this movie. It's not worth it.

Serenity - 9.5/10

I want Nathan Fillion's children. Could the guy be any more awesome?

May man-crush.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: 5/10 OR 8/10

I'm a sucker for these kinds of movies (as well as older-aged based rom-coms like As Good As It Gets and It's Complicated). While I realize there is really nothing to Diary, I still immensely enjoyed it.

Mononokehime (Princess Mononoke, Princess of the Moon Spirit)- 9/10

I loved it. Best anime I've watched in a long time. I went literally "F*ck yeah!" when the woman killed the demon-deer guardian of the forest thing.

I watched it because I had to, btw. The professor/textbook wanted to teach Japanese history + culture and all that through anime. Next up should be Akira or Legend of the Overfiend.

Tomorrow When The War Began - 8.5/10

Based off John Marsden's 1994 novel of the same name, Tomorrow When The War Began is one of the best Australian films I've ever seen, while still stereotyping us slightly, it, for most intensive purposes, portrays us fairly accurately. Whilst essentially being an Australian version of Red Dawn, it was very abstract from anything else I have ever seen (though that may be accounted for through my lack of extensive film knowledge).
Acting was above what I expected, considering the gal who played Ellie (the main character) started her acting career through the soap-opera, Neighbours.
All in all, it was a great adaptation of a highly regarded novel. I look forward to the sequels.

A load of actors from Neighbours and Home & Away have been in big budget productions lately. It's weird, to say the least, especially since most of them are actually competent actors when they're not just slumming it on some shitty soap.

Exit Through The Gift Shop (A Banksy Film) - 8/10

Bizarre and excellent. I'm still not quite sure what to make of this film - the way the distinctions between reality and fiction, real accounts and cynical commentary, characters and actual people are blurred makes it something of a convoluted mess, but that's how it should be. It's a street art disaster movie, it's pretty funny, it's interesting, it has Banksy in it. Recommended!

Weeds Season 5 8.5/10

much better than season 4, I feel its getting slightly better but nothing is usually better than the 1st season for most shows. the show does seem like selling less and less weed though and i don't approve of that. besides that its still funny

Rad film. I'd never heard of Mr Brainwash until that film either.

Well, that's due in 2 weeks. Why?
Well - and I realise I'm asking for it just by asking - but what has an adolescent porn fantasy about alien tentacle rape got to do with Japanese history and culture? That's just bizarre that anyone would show this film educationally.

I mean, even though Akira is rubbish, at least it's very much on topic.

What?

Seriously?

.........WTF?

Well, at this point I should probably admit that I haven't actually seen it (there's an easy admission to make), but it's a pretty notorious series (not even a film?)

Hard Candy:
wow this movie is hard to watch, really hard. I've never had to look away at a screen before in a movie actually before this movie o_O

Ending was abit disappointing in all honesty and thats probably due to the film not having a clue as to who we are supposed to support in the film's events =/

Both characters are dispicable people while one is arguably worse than the other, said worse person is never shown doing as such on film and so the 'vigilante' is seemingly portrayed as worse, i guess it is kinda up to the viewer more than anything

But it would maybe fit better if
both characters had their cummupance so to speak but the girl gets away scott free
and its just leaves the ending as a bit of a kick in the teeth imo :|

Falling Down:

Similar problem to above; is michael douglas' character supposed to be sympathetic or not? But unlike with Hard Candy it isn't really ambiguous and the film seemingly tries to do both and it just makes it strange. Other than that its a decent enough movie with some strange holes in its logic but an intriguing premise.

The Truman Show:

Great movie, great concept and really good to see carrey in a more serious role. Makes me want to see his other movies where he is more serious like man on the moon or something :)

or Legend of the Overfiend.

Wut.

So, I've gone and read the textbook in advance, and it seems that it claims that the Legend of the Overfiend is actually a very deep analysis of what pervades Japanese society and culture, it described in great detail about how "demons and monsters rape human women moaning in pain". And kids making demons rape their parents.

I'm pretty sure this isn't that educational, but what do I know.

so its one of those stupid things were people make it seem "deep" and all that but its really not cos at the end of the day its just a porno?

Hmm so its basically like Caligula then?

Law Abiding Citizen - 10/10
Inspired to watch by youtube hit 'Law Abiding Engineer.' Butler pretty much is the best goddamn actor ever. Says the right insults at the right time in the right tone at the right level. Loved the criticism of the justice and legal system.

You've never seen The Wire have you?

You'd appreciate it. Especially since you live in Maryland and it's set in Baltimore

The 2nd half Law Abiding Citizen is a crock of shit. Started well, then downward spiral of sillyness.

Daybreakers - 8/10

Was going pretty well but the last 1/4 was pretty much retarded. Main char doesn't even make out with the chick. At least Dafoe was cool.

Code 46 - ? /10

I don't even know what to think of this one. It was quite bizarre. Exploring cloning and unknown incest, memory erasing, dystopias, pidgen languages. A big bag of wtf.

The Crazies - 7.5/10...
Pleasantly surprised with this.
Great acting, decent scares, and great music.

But, it was also fairly predictable at times and some scenes were just plain stupid.(such as the ending)

Definitely worth a rental.

Dune(David Lynch version) - 6/10...
Not quite as terrible as I remember, now that I've read the book.
Still a fairly confusing mess though and some of things were just retarded.(the Weirding guns make no sense whatsoever)
The special effects, most of the acting, Fremen, and Atreides family as a whole were handled fairly well though.
Really hard to recommend it over the miniseries.

Let Me In
is a stupendous work of horror and romance, and Chloe Moretz is one of the most talented child actors I have ever seen. Both were absolutely incredible on every level. It has singlehandedly made me no longer despise vampires. That's quite an achievement. I would recommend it to anyone.

I have never seen Let The Right One In, but on its own Let Me In was absolutely fantastic.

The Road - 9/10

Fantastic insight into what real fallout would be like. It just really goes to show that when the chips are down, we civilised people really will eat each other as Ledger so greatly put it.

Its terrifying seeing what it could be like. A seriously emotional ride, filled with tension and a longing for survival.

And by god if it hasnt just about reduced me to tears.

You should have read the book first. The film really pales in comparison.
