Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms.

The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least three other people, including members of her staff, were injured. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Despite the condition of Giffords, there are also reports that a child was killed during the event. There's no confirmation on this, but nonetheless, this is pretty troubling news. What could make a man start shooting into a crowd randomly? He wasn't even aiming for any specific person, I've heard.

Yes. Other lives that are equally as valuable were lost. I don't place a politicians life above the life of anybody else. I don't even place the President's life above anybody elses, and I never will.

I hate how the media always focuses on people of interest rather than the regular people who basically are the foundation of those people in situations such as this.
 
Frankly, I think media coverage of celebrity/politician death is always more disgraceful to the dead than anything, so I don't mind it much. That Sarah Palin site is ridiculous though, I can't believe any public figure would design (or permit the designing of) a site with such obviously reckless connotations, given the sort of people that they must know they have as their demographic.

4:30 p.m. ET: Because the Associated Press is reporting that it has been told by "people familiar with the investigation" that the suspect is named Jared Lee Loughner, there's a rush to see these YouTube clips from someone saying that is his name — who writes of "conscience dreaming," a "new currency," English grammar, "mind control" and brainwashing. He concludes one video with the words "if I have my civil rights, then this message wouldn't have happen" [sic].

We need to be clear, though: There is no official word yet from authorities about the suspect's name. And any connection to the YouTube clips also has yet to be definitely made.

We need to realize that the rhetoric, and the firing people up and … for example, we’re on Sarah Palin’s ‘targeted’ list, but the thing is, the way she has it depicted, we’re in the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. I don't understand how anyone expects them to operate any other way. Not to sound harsh, but what do I care if some anonymous 9 year old was killed in an indiscriminate shooting like this? Is it just as sad as the politician (maybe) dying? Yes, perhaps moreso. Is it as newsworthy? Nope.

Well, then it's a heartless society we live in who don't actually care about the deaths and loss of life at all. They only care about what makes it newsworthy. Is that what you're saying? That's a completely detrimental way to operate in a modern society.

That's exactly how the media functions, and we can't do anything about it.
 
From the youtube account they shooter sounds like a fruitloop, however I think there is a degree of media respoisibilty in pushing nuts over the edge. Glenn Beck and Alex Jones in particular are always telling people how they under attack from government tyranny.

Sympathies go to the relatives of the deceased and hopes for those who were wounded, utter contempt for the shooter and the people who've influenced him.

Having watched some of his videos, I think this guy was not running on all cylinders...dude is all over the place, and his rants are nonsensical. He talks about how he needs sleep, he is at MEPS, etc...dude had some demons...

When a gunman shoots someone, it's not normally national news. But it could be, if the killer was politically, ideologically, or religiously motivated. Or, if the victim was a VIP. A public servant is a VIP.

Murder is the ultimate form of censorship. Was the Arizonian politician killed over something controversial? This is what interests me. Perhaps the gunman was of Hispanic descent, and this shooting was over those new illegal alien laws which essentially constitute racial profiling. Turns out its not, but that's what grasped my attention.

As far as I'm concerned the entire Republican party is complicit. They have intentionally spread dangerous misinformation against the Dems, and done nothing to squash this kind of thinking - the biggest (and only known) gesture was McCain saying "No, Obama is not a terrorist, he's a good man, and a friend", at a ****ING DEBATE. How widespread is this panic when the audience at a presidential debate thinks a running-mate for US presidency is a terrorist aimed at destroying the US? And Palin and the Tea Party in particular even incite the nuts to come out of the woodwork. I'm convinced they are the nuts.
 
McCain and Obama both had some pretty good quotes today. First time in a long while McCain has sounded halfway sane.

I'm surprised none of you remarked on the injuries she sustained. Only 5% of people receive gunshot wounds to the head and survive, and an even smaller amount actually respond to commands. She is very lucky to have made it this long.


As for the guy, he was targeting Giffords, but then decided to shoot up the whole crowd, as well. He was a psycho, no doubt about that. I've seen his Youtube videos about his pointless rambling, and the only thing I could decipher was some sort of 'new currency' mumbo-jumbo. Too bad videos like his, which are inane and meaningless, are commonplace for a site like Youtube.
 
One day, we will perfect a system of public observation that will forsee and prevent such incidences from occuring, well beforehand.
